Berlin (dpa) – During a visit to Berlin by Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has once again condemned all attempts at territorial expansion – no matter who undertakes them. “Borders must not be moved by force – to whom it may concern,” Scholz said ahead of his talks with Frederiksen at the Federal Chancellery. Scholz had already made similar remarks on various occasions in recent weeks in response to the territorial claims on Panama, Canada and Greenland expressed by US President Donald Trump. “The inviolability of borders is a fundamental principle of international law,” he has now stressed once again.
Greenland, which is largely autonomous, belongs to the Kingdom of Denmark. Trump has more than once signalled his interest in the world’s largest island with its extensive mineral resources and strategically important position. In front of the press with Scholz, Frederiksen did not say any more on the subject, though she did emphasise the growing importance of European cooperation. “We need a stronger and more resolute Europe that can increasingly stand on its own feet and is capable of defending and fostering European interests,” she said.
