After a few weeks of inactivity, trade talks involving NBA All-Star Donovan Mitchell have picked back up recently. The Utah Jazz seem destined to begin a rebuild this season as they already traded away Royce O’Neale and Rudy Gobert with draft capital being the focus of those returns.
In exchange for Mitchell, they are looking for a combination of draft picks and young players. It is an asking price that no team has yet approached, but the fact they are engaging with teams again could mean they are willing to negotiate off that price.
Right now, the New York Knicks seem to be the clear-cut favorite. They have made their interest in acquiring him known and they have the pieces to make a deal happen. Eight first-round draft picks and numerous young players litter the roster, making them an ideal trade partner for the Jazz.
However, the Knicks are not the only team that is pursuing Mitchell. According to Shams Charania and Tony Jones of The Athletic, the Charlotte Hornets and Washington Wizards are also among the teams pursuing him.
It is a bit surprising to see the Wizards on this list as they already re-signed Bradley Beal to a supermax contract this offseason. Beal and Mitchell would form a dynamic duo in the Washington backcourt, but neither are true point guards and they would be undersized defensively.
The Hornets need something positive to occur this offseason. The future of Miles Bridges is up in the air after he was charged with felony domestic violence and child abuse. There isn’t a player capable of replacing his production on the roster, so it makes sense they are in on Mitchell.
With a superstar point guard already in place in LaMelo Ball, the Hornets would have one of the best backcourt duos in the NBA pairing him with Mitchell. However, offense isn’t Charlotte’s problem. They struggle to slow their opponents down from scoring the ball and Mitchell won’t help too much in that regard.
