Data from the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers in South Africa (Naamsa) shows that a significant amount of SUVs are being purchased every month in South Africa.
During July, 21 out of the top 50 best-selling cars were SUVs or cross-overs, reported Naamsa.
The Toyota Corolla Cross is a top seller in 2022, on occasion selling more units than heavy-hitting passenger vehicles such as the VW Polo and Polo Vivo. The most recent data shows that the slightly cheaper SUV in Toyota’s stable, the Urban Cruiser, topped the sales list.
Recent sales figures now tell a different story, with the car not featuring on the top 50 sold vehicles for July – replaced by its cheaper cousin, the Urban Cruiser.
The Toyota Cruiser is currently the top sold SUV in South Africa.
Volkswagen, a competitor to Toyota, has been very active in the South African SUV/crossover market – launching a new version of the VW T-Roc in July, some of which formed the 196 units sold.
Despite the T-Roc being the last car on the list, its older brother, the T-Cros,s sold 1,007 units, positioned closely behind the Renault Kiger.
New vehicle sales in the country continued on an upwards trend, with Naamsa reporting that domestic sales in July 2022 reflected 43,593 units – an increase of 10,281 units (30.9%) from the year before.
Naamsa did note, however, that the new vehicle market’s performance recordings were distorted by the adverse economic events as well as the cyberattack on Transnet’s operations during July 2021.
