Start your journey by exploring São Tomé City, the capital of this former Portuguese colony. The city is charming, with its colonial buildings, cathedrals, and colorful streets. I visited the Presidential Palace, one of the most notable attractions.

You can’t go inside. But peeking inside to appreciate the history and architecture is worth it. Don’t forget your fashion glasses for some stylish sun protection as you stroll through the Bayfront views.

Visit Monte Cafe

Monte Cafe is an old coffee plantation located in the lush hills of Sao Tome. It’s a great spot to learn about coffee production, which has deep roots in the island’s culture. So the coffee here is amazing.

I tasted some freshly brewed coffee made from locally grown beans, and visited a nearby cacao plantation as well. Monte Cafe is also close to Casa das Artes, Ambiente e Utopias, a cultural center worth checking out.

Day Trip to Rolas Island

Rolas Island is a small island off the southern tip of Sao Tome. It’s one of the most stunning attractions in this Africa destination. A day trip here is a must! The island is famous for the equator line that runs through it, and its sand beaches are perfect for relaxing or snorkeling.

I brought my portable mini fan and water bottle to stay cool and hydrated while exploring.

Relax at Jale Beach

Jale Beach is one of the most peaceful places in Sao Tome and an important turtle nesting site. I visited during the nesting season and saw sea turtles laying eggs in their sandy nests. It was a magical experience!

The dry season is the best time to visit for clear skies and beach relaxation. This area is also great for spotting humpback whales offshore during September to November.

Discover Principe Island

Principe Island is known for its breathtaking natural beauty and laid-back vibe. I stayed at Bom Bom Island Resort, one of the top resorts in the area, and enjoyed days filled with calm and nature.

The tiny capital, Santo Antonio, is said to be the smallest city in the world. There’s a lovely bay and small shops with dishes that have unique ingredients. They also sell crafts that highlight the charm of Principe.

Visit Roca Sundy

Roca Sundy is a historic cocoa plantation with global fame. It’s where Einstein’s theory of relativity was confirmed during a solar eclipse in 1919.

Aside from its scientific history, Roca Sundy also gives insights into cocoa culture, and has become a notable stop in tourism itineraries. I enjoyed a tour of the menu offered at its onsite dining area, which showcases local cuisine. They have delicious tropical fruit, too!

Swim at Praia Banana

Praia Banana is one of the most beautiful beaches in Principe. The golden sand, turquoise water, and tropical setting make it a must-see. I spent hours swimming, reading, and soaking up the sun.

Sundy Praia, a luxury eco-lodge nearby, makes for a perfect stay. Whether you’re into whale watching or just relaxing, this beach has it all.

Tour the Cocoa Plantations at Diogo Vaz

Cocoa farming is central to Sao Tome & Principe’s identity. At Diogo Vaz, I toured cacao plantations and learned how chocolate is produced from bean to bar.

I even got to try some premium bars from the Claudio Corallo Chocolate Factory. If you love chocolate, this is a must-see stop!

Visit Roca Belo Monte

Roca Belo Monte is a scenic plantation turned guesthouse on Principe Island. It overlooks the stunning Baía das Aguihas (Bay of Eagles) and offers access to hidden beaches like Praia Boi.
