It has been years since Rockstar cemented itself as one of the most discussed and debated love stories in Hindi cinema. While fans have dissected the tragic end of Jordan and Heer’s journey for a long time, director Imtiaz Ali recently shared a surprising revelation that the film’s heartbreaking ending was never part of the original plan.
Speaking at a recent fan meet-up in Mumbai hosted by Laksh Maheshwari, Imtiaz opened up about the creative evolution of the 2011 cult classic. During the candid conversation, he revealed that the death of Heer, played by Nargis Fakhri, was not in the initial script he had planned years before the film went into filming.
According to the Imtiaz, the earliest version of the story took a completely different path. However, a setback forced him to rethink the entire narrative. He explained that the original draft he had written simply vanished, leading to a complete rewrite from scratch.
Imtiaz shared, “I wanted her to be alive. I wanted so many different things in Rockstar. In fact, I had written a full draft, but unfortunately I lost it and then years later when I got the chance of making Rockstar, I tried looking for it and I had lost it. It wasn’t in the computer.”
When the time finally came to bring Rockstar to the big screen, Imtiaz sat down to write the story once more. Without the original notes to guide him, the story began to shift naturally toward a more somber tone. He mentioned that the tragic arc for Heer emerged during this second writing process, heavily influenced by the legendary Punjabi folk tale, Heer Ranjha.
Explaining the shift in the climax, Imtiaz revealed, “So I wrote it again. This time when I was writing. I don’t know what happened. At the end of it, Heer was no more. I think it was also because I was following Heer Ranjha a lot. That is why the girl’s name was Heer and that she dies before Ranjha, so the movie ends before the death of Jordan.”
