Thomas Partey impresses despite early substitution in first Al Shabab start

Thomas Partey made his first start for Al Shabab on Tuesday but was substituted at half-time, despite a highly encouraging individual performance in the Saudi Pro League clash against Al Riyadh.

The Ghana midfielder, who had come off the bench in his debut for the club on Saturday, was handed a starting role just days later. He made an immediate impact with a commanding display in the middle of the park.

The midfielder recorded 46 touches, completed all of his crosses and aerial duels, and posted an 88% passing accuracy from 30 successful passes out of 34 attempts. He also completed seven passes into the final third, won five of seven duels, made three tackles and three clearances, and created two chances before being withdrawn at the interval.

Partey was withdrawn at the interval as Al Shabab went on to draw 3-3 in a captivating encounter against Al Riyadh.

Partey’s performance, though brief, suggests he is quickly finding his rhythm in Saudi Arabia.

The 33-year-old’s sharpness and influence in midfield will be a major boost for Ghana ahead of next month’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. The Black Stars are set to face Côte d’Ivoire on September 23, followed by a home clash against The Gambia on September 27.

The midfielder, who left Villarreal to join Al Shabab earlier this month, is expected to play a key role in Ghana’s qualifying campaign as they aim to return to the continental stage after missing the 2025 edition.
