Conor Benn is aiming to become a world champion for the first time as he fights Ryan Garcia in Las Vegas tonight.
The Briton challenges for the WBC welterweight belt at T-Mobile Arena in what could well prove to be a Fight of the Year contender.
Benn will hope to defy a gruelling weight cut that he says “dragged him down to the pits of hell” as he returns to the 147-pound division for the first time in almost four-and-a-half years in a bid to realise his title dreams.
The high-profile and eagerly-anticipated showdown represents a first defence of his maiden full world championship for Garcia, who dominated Mario Barrios in February to take the gold and bounce back from his shock loss to Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero in New York.
After two lucrative clashes with Eubank Jr up at super-middleweight that continued and potentially closed the book on British boxing’s most famous family rivalry, Benn ditched long-time promoter Eddie Hearn and Matchroom in order to sign with Dana White and Zuffa Boxing, later outpointing former super-lightweight world champion Regis Prograis at a catchweight of 150 pounds.
He has since penned an extension with Zuffa and now prepares for his maiden world title challenge, but is widely seen as the underdog on US soil against an opponent who is wildly unpredictable but a top-class operator when fully locked in and focused.
