Date published: 20 October 2026

Just under three hours north of Tokyo lies Aizuwakamatsu, a historic castle town nestled in western Fukushima Prefecture widely celebrated across Japan as “Samurai City.” For nine days this autumn, from November 7 to November 15, 2026, the city steps back into the Edo period for Aizu SAMURAI WEEK 2026.

Timed to coincide with peak autumn foliage and Japan’s official “Samurai Day,” this city-wide festival unites iconic castles, historic martial arts academies, artisan workshops, and local markets into an interactive playground for travelers eager to experience authentic warrior culture.

Why November? The Clever Wordplay of “Samurai Day”

The festival centers around November 11th, celebrated across Japan as “Samurai Day” (Samurai no Hi). The date comes from a playful bit of Japanese calligraphy: if you write the date in kanji, the number 10 (十) stacked directly over the number 1 (一) forms the character 士 (shi or samurai).

To honor this heritage, the city’s top cultural landmarks and local craftspeople team up to offer rare workshops, historical demonstrations, and walking tours across the town.

Participating Venues & Special Event Highlights

1. Tsuruga Castle: Iconic Red Roofs & Second Citadel Festivals

Tsuruga Castle is the only castle in Japan that features traditional red roof tiles (akagawara), engineered centuries ago using iron-rich clay to withstand freezing northern winters. During Samurai Week, visitors can explore the towering keep, take in sweeping views of the surrounding mountains draped in fall colors, and experience the castle grounds transformed by live performances and markets.

Expect Fukushima street food, farm-fresh produce, sake tastings, handmade crafts, and children’s play zones. Admission is free.

Clear examples do more than decorate an explanation: they show how an idea behaves under recognizable conditions. In education and software documentation alike, strong illustrations begin with a defined goal, then reveal the steps, assumptions, and result without unnecessary detail. A practical test example should state the input, expected output, and boundary condition, because these elements show whether a rule works beyond the simplest case. Including a contrasting case also helps readers distinguish a valid application from a tempting but incorrect one, while concise notes explain why the outcomes differ. When examples are updated with current data and checked against the underlying rule, they remain useful across classrooms, product guides, and professional training.
