Carlton great Robert Walls has been named in a coaching subcommittee chosen to appoint Essendon’s next coach following the club’s sacking of head coach Ben Rutten on Sunday.
Walls, a legendary player, coach and commentator – who worked under new president David Barham when Ten was the host broadcaster of the AFL – will be joined on the council by four-time premiership Hawk Jordan Lewis and Melbourne Vixens netball coach Simone McKinnis.
Essendon football manager Josh Mahoney will be the club’s representative and will lead the subcommittee after a leadership exodus which has seen former CEO Xavier Campbell, ex-president Paul Brasher and board members Simon Madden and Sean Wellman all leave their roles within the last week.

Former NAB CEO Andrew Thorburn and club director Dorothy Hisgrove round out the panel.
The external review of the club will be led by Thorburn and Hisgrove, with acting CEO Nick Ryan to liaise with the pair.
The review will address for key areas: board effectiveness and composition; a review of club leadership; operations and culture (including the football department); a senior coaching appointment and the employment of a permanent CEO.
Essendon is expected to have its next coach locked in by the end of September prior to the trade and draft periods later in the year.
