There’s been an assumption that Chelsea getting Moises Caicedo back from injury this weekend is going to solve all their problems. But in his press conference yesterday, Xabi Alonso was quick to point out that, while the midfielder will help the team a lot, there’s still a lot of learning and improving he needs to do.
“For sure Moi is going to play a very important role in the team because of the balance he gives, because of the many qualities he has. He’s in a moment where he needs to keep growing and keep learning,” Alonso said.
“I’m very excited to work with him and have him on the pitch in each game, and seeing the good and bad things together to give him confidence. To make sure he’s improving his game and understanding, and why to do the things. With the midfielders, I have a soft spot and with Moi, for sure.”
Chelsea can’t rely on Caicedo alone
We’ve all been saying how much of a difference Caicedo will make – but it’s important we don’t put it all at his feet. The assumption has been that the team will improve massively the moment he’s back in the team, but it won’t be so simple. We’ve got to manage our expectations, and the rest of the team have to know he can’t do it all on his own.
In other news…
Caicedo’s return is going to make all his teammates “happy,” Alonso added, because of what a generous player he is.
Cole Palmer has signed a new Chelsea contract, David Ornstein revealed today in a report for the Athletic.
