July 28, 2026: Temporary Protected Status for more than 350,000 Haitians expired at 11:59 p.m. Monday night, capping months of legal battles on Haiti TPS and marking what advocates are calling the start of a forced exodus back to a country in the middle of its own humanitarian collapse.
The deadline dates back to June 25, when the Supreme Court ruled 6-3 in Mullin v. Doe, reversing lower-court orders that had postponed TPS terminations for Haiti and Syria. Since then, the actual expiration date was pushed back three times – from July 1, to July 10, to July 24, and finally to Monday, July 27 – as a federal appeals court in Washington, D.C. granted a series of short reprieves while litigation continued. This time, no further extension came.
The flights have already begun
The administration didn’t wait for the deadline to pass. U.S. officials have told the Haitian government to expect deportation flights to increase to at least twice weekly once TPS formally ends. The first expanded flight already landed in Cap-Haïtien on July 16, carrying 111 people – more than a week before Monday night’s deadline.
Those flights are landing in a country the U.S. government’s own State Department says Americans should not visit. Haiti remains under the department’s highest-level “Do Not Travel” advisory, citing kidnapping, gang violence, terrorism and civil unrest. In an unusual addition to that advisory, the State Department now recommends Americans traveling to Haiti “leave DNA samples with your medical provider and dental records with your family in case it is necessary for your family to access them to identify your remains” – language first flagged by attorneys in Supreme Court filings as evidence that even the administration views the country as unsafe.
“This is not the time”
Haiti’s government has warned it lacks the capacity to absorb a sharp rise in returns. The country’s Prime Minister has said publicly that “this is not the time” to send Haitians back, citing worsening security and humanitarian conditions. Nearly 1.5 million people are already internally displaced within Haiti, according to humanitarian organizations tracking the crisis.
Guerline Jozef, executive director of the Haitian Bridge Alliance, an advocacy organization providing legal and humanitarian services to Black migrants, condemned the expanded deportations in a statement. “These deportations are adding fuel to an already devastating humanitarian catastrophe,” Jozef said. “The United States is knowingly returning people to a country overwhelmed by violence, mass displacement, and institutional collapse.”
The Trump administration has framed the ruling differently. White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson called the Supreme Court’s decision “a tremendous win,” saying TPS “was never intended to be a pathway to permanent status or legal residency.” DHS General Counsel James Percival struck a similar note, writing that the ruling affirms “the T in TPS stands for TEMPORARY.”
Springfield, Ohio in the crosshairs
Federal sources tell Fox News that ICE plans to sharply expand operations targeting Haitian nationals as soon as this week, with Springfield, Ohio identified as a primary target given its large Haitian population. Springfield became a national flashpoint during the 2024 presidential campaign over its rapid Haitian population growth, and now faces the prospect of large-scale enforcement action once protections formally lapse.
Where are the Haitians for Trump now?
Springfield was also home to a small but real number of Haitian-American Trump voters in 2024, despite their own community being the target of the president’s baseless “eating pets” claim during that year’s campaign. One Springfield voter, who asked to be identified only as “M.J.” out of fear of backlash from fellow Haitians, told the Haitian Times in 2024 that he cast his ballot for Trump anyway, citing his family’s self-reliance rather than immigration policy as his motivating issue.
Whether that support holds as deportation flights increase and ICE prepares to expand operations in the same city those voters call home is, as of now, an open question. NewsAmericasNow found no posts on X, Instagram or Facebook from Haitian Trump supporters addressing today’s deadline or the Springfield enforcement plans specifically. Their silence, so far, is as notable as anything said by the deadline’s loudest critics.
What comes next
Haitian Bridge Alliance joined lawmakers and many rights groups in calling on the administration and Congress to immediately suspend deportations to Haiti, restore and extend TPS, and pass S. 4814, a Senate bill that would designate Haiti for a three-year TPS term. None of those measures appear imminent.
For hundreds of thousands of Haitians who have built lives in the U.S. over the past 16 years, tonight’s deadline – whether it holds or is pushed back again – marks the latest chapter in a legal fight that began with a 2010 earthquake and has now reached the Supreme Court, an appeals court, and the White House itself.
