Two captains meet in the middle and toss a coin. The winner gets to decide how the next part of the game will begin. This moment is the only part of cricket that owes nothing to skill, and yet commentators talk about it as if half the match had already been settled.
So how much does winning the toss really give you? It gives you more options than losing it, but not as many as people say. The answer depends on the format of the game, the condition of the pitch, the time of day, and what the captain does with the choice.
What 150 years of results say
One study of particular note is “Fairly Random,” written by Apoorva Lal, Derek Willis, Gaurav Sood, and Avidit Acharya (2023). The authors accessed data on 35,357 cricket matches of various formats (men’s and women’s matches across Tests, first-class, ODI and T20). Overall, toss winners won 1.8 percentage points more often than they lost.
In Tests, the edge is approximately 5 points, and in first-class cricket it is around 2.3 points. In daytime ODIs and T20s, it is around zero. In T20s and ODIs played at night, it goes up to around 3.3 points.
The most compelling aspect of the data is related to the decisions. When given the choice, toss winners batted first slightly more often. In the cases where they batted first, they ended up winning and losing about the same number of games. When they chose to field, they won around 4 points more often than they lost. The study isn’t able to determine whether this represents good judgement or just the situations in which teams choose to field.

Why the advantage moves
Conditions are always changing. Three of them come up again and again:
- Pitch wear. The surface of the pitch deteriorates over a five-day Test match, and the fourth innings is often the hardest time to bat.
- Dew under lights. A wet ball is hard to grip for the side bowling second. At the 2021 men’s T20 World Cup in the UAE and Oman, toss winners won two games in every three. In Dubai, the chasing side won all ten night matches.
- The pink ball. Day/night Tests have tended to be shorter than red-ball Tests. The new-ball session and the twilight spell under the floodlights are seen as hard times to bat. Of the men’s day/night Tests played up to the end of 2025, none has ended in a draw.
Geography has less of an impact than myths and legends suggest, according to the study. Home strength can matter more. Beginning in late 2012, teams that won the toss and decided to bat in Tests played in India lost most of those matches. There were a few exceptions, such as the 2021 England match in Chennai. Then, in 2024 and 2025, visiting teams won five more Tests that way: England at Hyderabad, and New Zealand and South Africa twice each.
Cricket betting starts before the coin goes up
In market terms, the toss is new information, and markets reprice once it is known. So the useful work happens before the coin goes up: at this venue, at this start time, does the game favour batting first or chasing?
The 2026 IPL season shows what that read looks like. After 13 matches, sides batting second had won twice as many matches as sides batting first. Furthermore, almost every toss winner opted to field, and the only sides to deviate from that plan were the Rajasthan Royals and the Kolkata Knight Riders.
Big totals felt less safe too: chasing sides won 17 times against targets of 200 or more, almost double the 9 successful chases of 2025. Anyone who follows cricket betting should treat a trend like that as context for their own reading of the venue, not as a rule that repeats itself. The final did go to the chasers: Royal Challengers Bengaluru won the toss, bowled, and ran down Gujarat Titans’ 155 with overs to spare.

When the call after the coin goes wrong
In the annals of cricket, many captains have won the toss and lost the argument. An example of this occurred at Brisbane in 2002, when Nasser Hussain put Australia in to bat. At the close of play on the first day, Australia scored 364/2, and went on to win by 384 runs.
In 2005 at Edgbaston, Glenn McGrath famously trod on a stray ball in the warm-up and tore ankle ligaments. Despite this, Ricky Ponting decided to bowl first. England made 407 and won by 2 runs.
Batting first doesn’t keep teams safe either. England’s Joe Root, at Brisbane in 2021, chose to bat on a green pitch and England were all out for 147. Bengaluru in 2024 saw India captain Rohit Sharma bat first, and India were bowled out for 46, their lowest home Test total.
Ireland’s own lessons
Ireland lost its first Test against Pakistan in May 2018 at Malahide after William Porterfield put Pakistan in to bat. Pakistan won by 5 wickets. Ireland won its first Test against Afghanistan in March 2024 in Abu Dhabi after Afghanistan won the toss and chose to bat. The ICC commented that it was “a good toss to lose” for Ireland as Afghanistan were bowled out for 155.
Then came Stormont in Belfast, in May 2026. Ireland won the toss and decided to bowl. The pitch flattened. New Zealand declared on 490 and won by an innings on the third day.
How the authorities have tried to shrink it
The ECB tried the boldest fix: from 2016 to 2019, the visiting captain in the County Championship could choose to bowl first with no toss, to stop home counties preparing green seamers. The board said 85% of 2016 matches reached a fourth day, against 74% the year before. A University of Reading study in 2020 looked at all four seasons and found no evidence to suggest the rule reduced home advantage or made matches longer. The toss was reintroduced in 2020.
The game now polices pitches instead. Under the 2026 regulations, a pitch rated poor can cost the home side every point it earned from that match, and the Cricket Discipline Panel can impose further penalties.
While the ICC did not remove the toss in Tests in 2018, the IPL has been experimenting with a few changes to the format. In 2023, captains were able to select their starting XIs after the toss, and in 2025, the side that bowled second in evening games was allowed to call for a one-time change of the game ball during the chase to account for dew.
The coin is only the start
In cricket, the team that wins the toss has the advantage of choosing, not of winning. The overall edge is small, but larger in Tests and in matches played under lights, and it shows up mostly in matches where the toss winner fields first.
For anyone interested in cricket betting, that is the honest takeaway: the coin is worth little on its own, and the pitch, the clock and the weather decide whether the choice was any good.
