Australian Shares Dip Below 8,830 Amid US Midterm Uncertainty and RBA’s Fifth Rate Increase

Australian Shares Decline Amid U.S. Election Uncertainty and Rate Hike

SYDNEY — Australian equity markets experienced a downturn Wednesday afternoon, driven by investor apprehension regarding the impending U.S. midterm elections and reactions to a recent interest rate increase from the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA). Financial and healthcare sectors were notably affected, leading the overall market decline.

As of 2:29 p.m. AEDT, the S&P/ASX 200 index was down 63.8 points, or 0.72%, settling at 8,823.0. The index opened significantly lower and spent the majority of the trading day in negative territory, reversing a modest gain recorded the previous day.

Market Overview

On Tuesday, the ASX 200 exhibited volatility before concluding the session up by 0.35% at 8,886.8 points, following a lackluster start to the week. Earlier, on Monday, the index had dropped by 0.58%, predominantly influenced by losses in sectors such as gold, metals, mining, and consumer staples.

Weak Start and Broader Losses

The day’s weak opening foreshadowed the downturn, with SPI futures indicating a 41-point, or 0.45%, decline. Wall Street’s mixed performance contributed to this sentiment, with the Dow Jones falling by 0.45%, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq recorded gains of 0.35% and 0.75%, respectively.

The ASX 200’s decline deepened faster than anticipated, dropping 63.40 points, or 0.71%, to 8,823.40 by 10:10 a.m. AEDT. Consumer discretionary stocks suffered the heaviest losses early in the session. By late morning, the drop had extended across the board, with the financial and healthcare sectors each decreasing by 0.9%. Among the 11 sectors, utilities performed the best, gaining 0.8%, followed by technology up 0.7% and energy up 0.6%.

Focus Shifts to U.S. Midterms

Investors across the Asia-Pacific region remained cautious as results began to emerge from the critical U.S. midterm elections, set to define congressional control for the remainder of President Donald Trump’s administration. U.S. stock futures slipped and the dollar softened in anticipation. Democrats were favored for the House, while Senate races remained closely contested. S&P 500 futures declined 0.5%, with Nasdaq futures down by 0.9%.

Market analysts noted that the contest’s results could have significant implications. Chris Weston, head of research at Pepperstone, emphasized that the difference between a narrow Democratic majority and a sweeping victory is pivotal for traders, pointing out that a narrow outcome might already be factored into the market.

RBA’s Rate Hike Adds Pressure

The selloff coincided with the RBA’s announcement of yet another increase in borrowing costs. The central bank raised the cash rate to 4.85% on Tuesday, citing domestic inflation along with impacts from global oil prices and advancements in artificial intelligence.

This marks the fifth rate hike in 2026, bringing the cash rate to its highest level since 2008, according to a note by Commonwealth Bank. Westpac’s chief economist, Luci Ellis, suggested that the division among board members raises the likelihood of a pause in December.

In response, lenders moved rapidly to adjust their offerings. National Australia Bank indicated it would increase its variable home loan rates by 0.25 percentage points, effective November 13.

Consumer Spending Shows Resilience

Despite rising costs, new economic data indicated that Australian consumers continued to spend. Household spending rose by 0.6% in September, following a marginal decline in August. Fuel expenditures surged by 5.4% in September, reflecting both elevated global oil prices and the conclusion of temporary fuel excise relief.

However, economists warned of potential weaknesses ahead. Marcel Thieliant from Capital Economics cautioned that much of the recent growth was inflation-driven, projecting that consumer spending may increase by only about 1% in the coming year as higher interest payments and inflation constraints weigh on real incomes.

Mixed Commodity Performance

The commodities market presented a mixed picture. Copper prices fell to a seven-week low, decreasing by 2.2% to settle at $14,036 per tonne, influenced by recalibrations relating to the artificial intelligence trade and Middle Eastern diplomatic developments.

Gold has also experienced a significant retreat, dropping approximately 30% from its January peak of around $5,589 per ounce to about $3,920. Companies such as Westgold Resources and Northern Star Resources faced challenges due to the decreased gold price.

Oil prices remained elevated yet volatile, with Brent crude futures climbing 0.8% to $104.47 per barrel, rebounding from a four-week low. Iron ore prices increased slightly by 0.6% to $91.55 per tonne.

Corporate News Highlights

In corporate news, the High Court of Australia upheld a ruling against Uber, requiring the rideshare company to pay $81 million in payroll taxes in New South Wales. The technology sector saw Canva announcing a significant restructuring, impacting 1,271 employees, or 22% of its workforce.

Goodman Group reported that its data center development projects remain on schedule, while Scentre Group confirmed that David Jones has paid all rents through September 30 for spaces within its centers. Analysts also adjusted their outlooks on various stocks, with Morgans downgrading ratings for Westpac and Boss Energy.

Market Outlook

As the U.S. election results continue to unfold and the RBA hints at a potential pause in rate hikes, traders anticipate that the near-term direction for Australian equities will heavily depend on the outcomes of the congressional races and bond market responses. The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield climbed to 4.96% following positive job vacancy reports.

The ASX 200 appears set for its second losing session out of three days as the market approaches the 4 p.m. AEDT close.
