Berlin (dpa) – To mark the seizure of power by the Taliban in Afghanistan two years ago, Germany’s Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has criticised the Islamists’ governance. “Two years of Taliban rule mean two years of regression towards the Stone Age for the people of Afghanistan,” Baerbock said. Millions of people in the country are suffering from hunger, and almost every week the Taliban are taking away another part of the freedom from women and girls, she added. Baerbock ruled out any normalisation of relations with the Taliban government, which has so far not been recognised by any country in the world. This will also not happen for as long as it “continues to exclude half of society from working life and social participation.”
According to UN Women Germany, the Taliban have issued more than 50 decrees that affect all aspects of the lives of women. Currently, they are denied access to further education, to public sector employment and to numerous public places such as parks.
On 15 August 2021, the militant Islamist Taliban seized power again in Afghanistan, even before US troops had fully withdrawn. Ever since, the humanitarian situation has also deteriorated massively. Welthungerhilfe Asia Regional Director Elke Gottschalk said that 17 million people in Afghanistan are at risk of hunger, while 29 million are reliant on humanitarian assistance.
