Bafana Bafana have discovered their final Group A opponents for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where they will face Mexico, Czech Republic and South Korea.
Czechia secured their place in the tournament after edging Denmark 3-1 on penalties following a dramatic 2-2 draw after extra time in their playoff clash.
This marks a significant milestone for South Africa, who have qualified for their first World Cup in 24 years, having last appeared on the global stage as hosts in 2010. After finishing top of their qualifying group, Hugo Broos’s side will return to the tournament after a 16-year absence.
Mixed preparations for Bafana ahead of World Cup
Bafana’s recent form has been inconsistent heading into the showpiece event. They reached the last 16 of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations before playing two international friendlies against Panama in March.
Those matches produced mixed results, with South Africa earning a 1-1 draw in Durban before suffering a 2-1 defeat in Cape Town.
Can Bafana progress from Group A?
South Africa face a tough task if they are to advance beyond the group stage. Their campaign begins against hosts Mexico on 11 June, with El Tri ranked 15th in the world and expected to pose a serious challenge.
Seven days later, Bafana will take on Czechia before concluding their group stage campaign against South Korea.
While Denmark, ranked 20th, could have been their second opponent, Czechia’s victory in the playoffs may offer a more favourable opportunity. Ranked 40th, the European side could present a more balanced contest, potentially giving Broos’ men a realistic chance of securing valuable points.
Bafana need magic at the World Cup
To progress to the knockout stages, Bafana will likely need at least one win and a draw.
Based on their recent performances, achieving that target will require a disciplined and spirited effort throughout the group stage.
