Berlin (dpa / d.de) – More than half a million people are celebrating the traditional Carnival of Cultures in Berlin over the Whitsun weekend. The cultural festival will culminate in a colourful and exuberant parade on Whit Sunday that will see 3,500 people in around 60 groups championing tolerance and understanding. “Each year, we use our art to show that we oppose discrimination of any kind and to celebrate an open and diverse society,” the intercultural festival’s organisers explained ahead of the event. This reflects the “diversity of Berlin and our world”.
Having started out small in 1996, the intercultural festival has been celebrated every Whitsun ever since. The performances by music and theatre artists showcase and celebrate the many different cultures in the German capital, and what the city’s people have in common.
