Britney Spears has blamed her mum for the conservatorship that controlled her life for 13 years.

The singer’s father has been the public face of legal arrangements regarding her giving her minimal say in her personal and financial affairs.

In a now-deleted Instagram post, the singer claimed the conservatorship was her mother Lynne Spears’ idea.

“What people don’t know is that my mom is the one who gave him the idea,” she said. “I will never get those years back… she secretly ruined my life.”

She continued: “You know exactly what you did. My dad is not smart enough to ever think of a conservatorship, but tonight I will smile knowing I have a new life ahead of me.”

Spears’ post is believed to have been prompted by her father request for the “immediate” and “unconditional” termination of the conservatorship.

The arrangement is a form of legal guardianship normally granted for people who are unable to make their own decisions, like those with dementia or other mental illnesses.

In court documents obtained by the BBC, Jamie Spears’ lawyer said, “Jamie unconditionally loves and supports his daughter. Full stop.”

“The fact is that 13 years ago, a conservatorship was necessary to protect Britney in every sense of the word. Her life was in shambles, and she was in physical, emotional, mental and financial distress.

“Through the conservatorship, Britney has been able to return to a path towards stability in all of these phases of her life. The mission has been successful, and it is now time for Britney to re-take control of her life.”

In her Tuesday post, Britney also named her former business manager Lou Taylor as helping to orchestrate the conservatorship. Neither she nor Lynne Spears have responded to the comments.

Responding, her mother has requested over $650,000 in attorney-related fees.

In a petition filed on Monday, Lynne Spears requested that Britney’s estate pay for her attorneys for their involvement in her conservatorship case.

Lynne’s attorneys claimed in court files that the popstar’s mother reached out to them to “help Britney free herself from what she saw as a very controlling existence.” They also state that they engaged in “researching and vetting appropriate qualified expert doctors” for Britney in May 2019 and later said they advocated for Jamie’s removal from the conservatorship.

“Lynne discussed joining the conservatorship as an interested party extensively with Britney, and Britney enthusiastically agreed, and indeed asked her mother to join in the case in any capacity that would help to end her nightmare and the crisis she was enduring,” the document read.

As for the breakdown of fees, Lynne’s attorneys at Jones Swanson stated that their fees amounted to $840,000, but they were “willing to apply a 40% discount” and asked for $504,000. The other fees would correspond to attorneys at Ginzburg & Bronshteyn, which requested $146,548 in fees.

The attorney fees would be discussed at a Dec. 8 court hearing, after the Nov. 12 hearing where Judge Brenda Penny will decide whether or not to terminate Britney’s conservatorship.
