Bumped From a Flight? Here’s What You Can Get

A couple weeks ago, we flew from Baltimore to Reno for a family vacation in nearby Lake Tahoe. I try to avoid connections but we didn’t have a choice on this one, we had to go through Denver.

As you can imagine, the (im)perfect storm hit. There was weather in Boston so our plane arrived late and we missed our connection. We were then scheduled on a flight to Las Vegas that would then go to Reno, a dreaded two connection flight.

But, as it turns out, there were thunderstorms in Denver too. They were on a ground delay and we opted to stay the night and fly directly to Reno the next morning.

And in all that delay, we we expected and were owed nothing because they were due to weather.

But what I overheard in the next gate was incredible. They had overbooked the flight and needed NINE volunteers. They asked for volunteers and the last offer was for $2,400 in flight credits per person. The best part is you’d still get to their destination, just six hours later at around 4pm.

I knew that if you got bumped from a flight, the airline was supposed to compensate you. But until I heard the gate agent say “two thousand four hundred dollars” – I had no idea how much they had to compensate you.

And what’s wild is that they were offering, in credit, more than what they would’ve been legally required to.

Here’s what you need to know if you’re ever bumped:

Quick Answer: If you are involuntarily bumped from an oversold flight, you could get up to $2,150 in cash compensation under U.S. Department of Transportation rules. The amount depends on how much later you’d arrive at your final destination and how much you paid for your one-way ticket.

    2. How Much Can You Get?
    3. How Do They Pay You?
  3. 🟡 Not Bumped But Delayed
  4. You Need to Know The Rules

🟢 Voluntary Bumping

If an airline overbooks a flight and asks for volunteers, it’s because they want to avoid paying out the federal guidelines of 200% or 400% of the original flight’s price. If you accept their offer, you’re considered a volunteer and those rules don’t apply.

The offers typically come with airline vouchers, meals, hotel vouchers, etc. They typically won’t offer cash though.

If they ask once, chances are they will ask again. If you have flexible travel plans, you can usually get a pretty hefty payoff if you wait and others don’t jump at the chance. It’s a bit of a prisoner’s dilemma, except if you “lose” you still get to your destination on time. 🤣

Airlines prefer volunteers because it’s better to bribe someone than kick them off a flight and pay them off afterwards.

🔴 Involuntary Bumping

If you don’t take the bribe and the airline has to bump you, you’re entitled to compensation and this compensation has to meet federal guidelines.

First, Do You Qualify?

First, you have to meet all of these conditions:

  • You have a confirmed reservation,
  • You checked in before the airline’s deadline,
  • You arrived at the gate on time,
  • Your flight departed from a U.S. airport,
  • The flight was oversold,
  • The airline couldn’t get you to your final destination within an hour of your original arrival time. (layovers don’t count)

If you don’t meet all of those conditions, then compensation might not apply.

Here’s where you need to know why you were bumped. If you were bumped because aircraft was changed to a smaller plane for operational or safety issues, then you don’t qualify. If weather delayed your flight, that also doesn’t count. It has to be because the airline oversold your flight.

How Much Can You Get?

How much you are entitled to is based on how late you arrive at your final destination. Layovers don’t count.

For domestic flights:

Delay Time Compensation
Less than an hour None
1 – 2 hours 200% of your one-way fare,
up to $1,075
2+ hours 400% of your one-way fare,
up to $2,150

For international flights (departing from the U.S.):

Delay Time Compensation
Less than an hour None
1 – 4 hours 200% of your one-way fare,
up to $1,075
4+ hours 400% of your one-way fare,
up to $2,150

If on your replacement flight you don’t get any of the “extras” you paid for on the original flight, like preferred seating, you’re generally entitled to have those fees refunded too.

How Do They Pay You?

If you’re entitled to compensation, the airline generally must offer it to you at the airport that same day. If your replacement flight leaves before they can pay you, they’re supposed to pay you within 24 hours.

Airlines may offer you an airline voucher but you do not have to accept the airline voucher, you are entitled to cash.

🟡 Not Bumped But Delayed

What if you were not bumped but the flight was delayed or cancelled by something the airline could control? That falls under airline policies and not federal law.

For this, your flight needs to have a significant change, which is:

  • Domestic flight arriving 3+ hours late
  • International flight arriving 6+ hours late
  • A change to your departure or destination airport
  • An itinerary with additional connections
  • An involuntary downgrade to a lower class

If this happens, you can get a free refund if you cancel your flight. If you take the flight, you can’t get anything.

If the delay or cancellation is something within the airline’s control like a maintenance issue, crew shortage, fueling, cabin cleaning, or baggage-related, you would have to know the policy of the airline and potentially remind them of it.

If the disruption is due to weather, like our trip, they don’t have to pay for anything. They didn’t have to pay for our hotel or meals. If we opted to cancel the flight, we could’ve gotten our money back but then we were stuck in Denver.

You Need to Know The Rules

Remember this important fact (of life) – If you don’t advocate for yourself, airlines won’t do it for you. The gate agents aren’t being mean, they’re simply doing their job. They may also be stressed having to deal with the same issues over and over again. They don’t have to tell you how much you’re entitled to. Just remember to be polite, keep your wits about you, and remember they’re people too.

Do not volunteer too early! Airlines will increase their offer if they don’t get enough takers. If they need a lot of people, chances are they won’t get them on the first offer of $200 or whatever they start with.

It’s a business decision. Airlines overbook on purpose, they know some people won’t show up and so they can collect more money. When it backfires, they pay up. But since they’ve been doing this forever, we know it’s profitable in the end.

Getting bumped sucks. But it happens and it’s important to remember how much you are entitled to and when. If it’s because of an oversold flight and you’re delayed by more than an hour, get at least 2x the price of your one-way ticket. If it’s more than 2 hours, get 4x.

The next time an airline starts asking for volunteers, don’t automatically raise your hand. Listen to the offers. If they’re willing to pay thousands of dollars in flight credits, they’re trying to avoid paying passengers they’re forced to bump. Knowing the rules gives you leverage, whether you’re negotiating to volunteer or making sure you receive the compensation you’re legally owed.
