Berlin (dpa) – The evacuation mission conducted in Sudan by the Bundeswehr, the German army, has so far flown 311 people out of the war-torn country. This was announced on Monday by the Bundeswehr’s operations command. More than half of those evacuated are Germans. The evacuation flights are to continue for as long as the security situation permits. To this end, the Bundeswehr has set up a militarily secured operations point at an airfield near Khartoum in order to fly out German nationals and the citizens of other states. In total, around 1,000 soldiers are taking part in the mission. The evacuees will first be taken to Jordan, where onward transportation to their home countries will be organised. The first 101 evacuees from Sudan already arrived in Berlin early Monday morning.
More than a week ago, heavy fighting had broken out in Sudan between the country’s two most powerful generals and their units. The two men have led the country in northeast Africa with a population of around 46 million since two joint military coups in 2019 and 2021.
