Lebanon’s Shiite movement Hezbollah has condemned cartoons recently published in the French satirical publication Charlie Hebdo, saying they make fun of Iran’s supreme leaders, the Associated Press reported.
In the latest issue of the publication, the winners of a caricature contest were published, in which the participants had to depict Ayatollah Khamenei in the most offensive way possible. The competition was announced as an expression of support for the months-long anti-government protests in Iran.
The Iran-backed organization called the publication of the cartoons an “ugly act” aimed at Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
The agency notes that the movement has called on France to impose sanctions on the editorial office.
“We call on the French government to take decisive measures to punish those behind the attacks against the top officials of an entire country,” Hezbollah said in a statement, adding that “the French government must not be complicit in this crime.” .
France has not yet made a comment on the matter, the agency specifies.
Over the years, “Charlie Hebdo” has been the target of attacks for its cartoons. In 2015, two extremists from “Al-Qaeda” carried out a terrorist act against the editorial office, killing 12 cartoonists, AP recalls.
