Ibrahim Tanko reveals when he knew Medeama would win the league

Medeama SC coach Ibrahim Tanko has opened up on the moment he became almost certain his side would win the Ghana Premier League title this season.

Tanko explained that Medeama’s victory over Bibiani Gold Stars gave him belief that the title race was leaning in their favour. He also described sealing the league with a game left to play as a major achievement for the club.

The Medeama trainer made the remarks during his pre-match press conference ahead of his side’s final league game against Hearts of Oak.

Medeama head into the Week 34 clash in strong form, having won four of their last five matches and hoping to finish the campaign on a high note away from home.

“I think in the day we beat the Bibiani Gold Stars and definitely they are behind us and then I think the game against Basake Holy Stars and after that game I am 90 95% sure that we are going to win the league. And then and God been so good and we finish it with Heart of Lions here and one game before the season I think is a very good achievement,” he told Medi TV.

Hearts of Oak enter the fixture after recording one win, two draws and two defeats in their last five matches.

Ghana to face Laryea Kingstonâ??s Uganda in U17 World Cup playoff

Ghana will face Uganda in a decisive playoff for qualification to the FIFA U17 World Cup after missing out on an automatic place at the 2026 U17 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

The Black Starlets were denied a quarter-final place after a drawing of lots in Rabat following a dramatic finish in Group D.

Ghana defeated South Africa 3-1 in their final group game to move onto four points, but Algeria also finished with the same number of points despite losing 2-1 to Senegal.

Both Ghana and Algeria ended the group stage with identical records in goals scored, goals conceded and goal difference, while their earlier meeting had ended 2-2.

CAF regulations required a drawing of lots to separate the teams, with Algeria eventually advancing to the quarter-finals and securing automatic qualification to the FIFA U17 World Cup.

Ghana, however, still remain in contention for a World Cup place through the playoff route.

The playoff clash will see the Black Starlets come up against a Uganda side coached by former Ghana international Laryea Kingston, who previously handled the Black Starlets.

The encounter is expected to attract huge attention, with both sides chasing one of the remaining African slots at the FIFA U17 World Cup in Qatar later this year.

Kofi Adams welcomes ‘ways and means’ for Black Stars ahead of 2026 World Cup

The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, says he is open to any legitimate methods that could help Ghana prepare well to succeed at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking on the issue of preparations for the tournament, the minister stressed that while he is not against so-called “ways and means” being used to support the Black Stars, every action must remain transparent and properly documented.

According to Kofi Adams, all funds allocated to the Black Stars must be publicly accounted for to ensure transparency and avoid hidden expenditures.

“I’m not opposed to ‘ways and means’ but it must be transparent. If we think that as a country – others are doing science and we want to combine science and this – then we must do it. But in doing it, let us not hide and at the end of the day, we come and see some big budget there,” Kofi Adams said in an interview with SportyFM.

The minister further insisted that every financial transaction linked to the national team should be disclosed to the public.

“Every dollar or cedi that is spent on the Black Stars, the public will know. Any money that cannot be made known, it means it cannot be spent as far as the World Cup is concerned.”

The Black Stars are currently preparing for what will be their fifth appearance at the FIFA World Cup.

Kofi Adams has consistently maintained that financial discipline and transparency will remain central to the government’s approach toward supporting the national team ahead of the tournament.

Ghanaian defender Morrison Agyemang names in MLS Team of the Week

Ghanaian centre-back Morrison Agyemang has been named in the MLS Team of the Week after an outstanding display for Charlotte FC against Toronto FC after matchday 14. 

The defender produced a strong performance and was a rock at the back as Charlotte eased past Toronto 3-1 to return to winning ways, their first since April 18.

Morrison, who joined Charlotte from Crown Legacy, their reserve side, has been a revelation for the club and continues to make the headlines in the MLS.

The 21-year-old is joined by Juan Manuel Sanabria of Real Salt Lake and Mbekezeli Mbokazi Chicago Fire’s in defence.

CANADA’S High Commissioner to Ghana, Madam Myriam Montrat, has cautioned Ghanaian football fans planning to attend the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico that match tickets would not serve as entry visa to Canada.

“A FIFA World Cup ticket is not a visa, so if you have one, it does not guarantee your entry to Canada,” she emphasised.

Madam Montrat made the remarks during a national forum on trafficking in sports in Ghana.

It was organised as part of the ‘Addressing human trafficking in Sports in Ghana’ project, funded by the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) Development Fund at the Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research (ISSER) Conference Hall, Legon.

According to Madam Montrat, people with fraudulent travel schemes are targeting vulnerable people with fake World Cup travel promises to dupe them and traffic them as well.

“With so many young athletes expressing a desire to pursue sport careers abroad and with limited access to formal and regulated recruitment pathways, the risk of abuse, fraud, and exploitation increases.”

“A major international sporting event like the 2026 FIFA World Cup unfortunately amplifies this risk; experience shows that large events attract fraudulent actors who seek to take advantage of increased interest in travel and opportunities and the upcoming Mundial is no exception,” she cautioned.

“We are already seeing examples of fake jobs and volunteer offers, fraudulent recruitment opportunities for athletes, soccer fans, scam visa guarantees and expediting processing.”

She explained Canada has taken the risk very seriously and has taken concrete steps to protect applicants and maintain the integrity of the immigration system, including strengthening the security of online application systems.

“Individuals who submit fraudulent documents may face serious consequences including refusal of their applications and a five-year ban from entering Canada,” she added.

To this end, Madam Montrat cautioned would-be applicants that no individual or agent can guarantee entry into Canada with a World Cup match ticket or a favourable immigration outcome.

She disclosed that Canada was working closely with not only the government of Ghana but the IOM, Civil Society, and international partners to raise awareness about fraud and irregular migration, promote ethical recruitment practices, prevention and protection mechanisms, as well as support coordinated responses to trafficking and exploitation.

The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MoGCSP), through the Department of Social Welfare, in collaboration with Cherish a Child Foundation, joined the global community to commemorate the International Day for Street Children under the theme, “Protect, Not Punish.”

The event highlighted the urgent need to shift societal and institutional responses toward street children from criminalisation to protection, care, and inclusion.

In an address delivered on behalf of the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, the Director of the Department of Social Welfare and Chairperson of the event, Dr. Prince Boamah Abrah, emphasised that street children are among the most vulnerable in society and deserve compassion, not condemnation.

He noted that many of these children are driven to the streets by factors such as poverty, neglect, abuse, and limited access to basic social services.

According to him, the theme calls for a fundamental shift in mindset—from criminalising vulnerability to protecting dignity, and from neglecting needs to restoring hope.

Dr. Prince Boamah Abrah stressed that the government, through programmes such as LEAP and the School Feeding Programme, supports vulnerable households to reduce the economic pressures that push children onto the streets.

He called on all to choose compassion over indifference and protection over punishment in order to save children living on the streets.

Speaking at the event on behalf of the Chief Director of MoGCSP, Dr. Marian W. A. Kpakpah, a Principal Programmes Officer from the Department of Children, Madam Angela Kangah, stated that justice means creating systems that listen to children and respond to their needs rather than punishing them for their poverty.

“In doing so, we are choosing to invest in a brighter future for the entire country,” she added.

Delivering a goodwill message at the event, the Chief Executive Officer of Cherish a Child Foundation, Madam Salome Delali, emphasised that street children are not criminals. They are victims of circumstance who need protection and support to rebuild their lives. She called for stronger collaboration among various institutions to successfully help remove children from the streets.

A moving segment of the programme featured testimonies from Nicholas Mawunyo, a street-connected child who shared his daily struggles and aspirations. His voice reinforced the central message of the theme—urging society to see street children as children in need of care rather than punishment.

The commemoration ended with a collective call to action for all stakeholders to intensify efforts to protect vulnerable children and ensure that no child is left behind.
