When you got married, you committed to your wife or husband. You said the commitment would last a lifetime and you meant it. But commitment isn’t a decision you make only once. A lasting relationship asks you to make that choice again and again.
What Is Commitment?
Commitment is more than a promise to stay together for life. It goes beyond that to something you practice in everyday moments. When you choose your relationship daily, you build trust, deepen your connection, and experience greater intimacy.
Commitment means approaching life as a team. Your partner’s needs, feelings, and experiences matter to you—not because you have to agree on everything or always put their needs ahead of your own, but because their life is intertwined with yours.
Everyday Commitments
What do everyday commitments actually look like?
They can be as simple as picking up your spouse’s favorite chips at the grocery store or turning to them when you’re upset about something that happened at work. Your partner is someone you think about and take into consideration as you move through your day.
Small decisions matter. Asking yourself, “How might this affect my partner?” or “What would this mean for us?” is one way of keeping your relationship present even when your partner isn’t in the room.
Commitment also means choosing your partner when it would be easy not to.
Here are some examples of choosing your partner and reinforcing your commitment:
- You bring a frustration to them rather than complain about them to someone else.
- When you say you’ll do something, you follow through with it.
- You respond to a bid for connection even when you’re distracted or have other things to do.
- After conflict you choose to come back and repair.
None of these moments may feel particularly significant on their own. Together, however, they send an important message: You matter to me. I am thinking about us.
The Importance of Rose-Colored Glasses
Commitment is also reflected in how you think about your partner. One way to think about it is seeing your partner through rose-colored glasses. You notice their positive qualities and behaviors and, when something goes wrong, you are more likely to give them the benefit of the doubt rather than assume bad intentions.
This doesn’t mean you don’t notice their annoying habits or that you excuse hurtful or unhealthy behavior. Instead, you aren’t constantly looking for what they are doing wrong or keeping a running tally of their mistakes.
Over time, it can be easy to become more focused on your partner’s shortcomings. You may start comparing them to other people or imagining how much easier things would be if they were different. All partners come with perpetual problems – trading a partner will just be trading problems.
Commitment asks you to resist that mindset of wishing your partner was different and continue to nurture appreciation for the person you chose and the relationship you have built together.
Notice what your partner does well. Remember the qualities that first drew you to them. Pay attention to the small ways they contribute to your life and your relationship. And express your appreciation out loud rather than assuming they already know how you feel.
Commitment During Conflict
It can be easy to feel committed when you are getting along. But when you’re frustrated, hurt, or angry with each other, choosing commitment can feel much harder, and that’s also when the choice can be most meaningful.
During conflict you might be angry with your partner, but you can still protect the relationship. You can disagree without threatening to leave. You can take a break when an argument becomes heated while making it clear that you will come back to the conversation.
Even in difficult moments, you can remind yourself that you are on the same team. These are all pillars of commitment; the foundation of which is ‘We are on the same team and we will figure this out together’.
Choosing Your Relationship Again and Again
Long term love is built through thousands of seemingly small moments and insignificant choices.
It is remembering the chips. Putting down your phone when your partner wants to tell you something. Checking in before making a decision that affects both of you. Saying thank you. Repairing after a hurtful comment. Making time for each other even when your schedule says otherwise.
While your relationship may have started with one big commitment, its strength and wellbeing comes from the smaller micro commitments you make afterward.
Choose your partner today. Then choose them again tomorrow and the next day and the next…
