Commonwealth Games live: Kelsey-Lee Barber cleared to compete in javelin events after testing positive for COVID last week

Australia’s Kelsey-Lee Barber has been given the all-clear to compete in Birmingham after testing positive for COVID just before the opening ceremony.

But Kathryn Mitchell and Ash Moloney, two other big contenders on Australia’s track and field teams, have been forced to withdraw due to illness.

Cricket: England in charge against New Zealand

The Poms are in the driver’s seat in their top-of-the-table Group B clash with New Zealand, chasing just 72 runs to win.

New Zealand were 9-71 at the end of their 20 overs, with Maddy Green top-scoring with a whopping 19 runs.

England did lose Danni Wyatt in the first over of their run chase, but you’d have to think England will coast to victory, barring a catastrophic collapse.

That’s relevant for Australia too, because they’ll face the loser of this match, who will finish second in the group, in the semi-finals.

Boxing: Tina Rahimi through to the semi finals

A terrific display from Tina Rahaimi.

She’ll fight for a medal in the semi finals after a dominant display against England’s Sameenah Toussaint.

All five judges gave Rahaimi the result.

A tremendous performance all round.

Australia now has five boxers in the medal fights out of a team of 11.

Boxing: Rahimi in control in her quarter final

Great work from Tina again in that second round.

She landed some good shots, including a nasty upper cut and ended up dropping the Englishwoman right at the end of the round.

Toussaint had a point taken off too!

This fight is hers for the taking. Nothing silly and she’ll be in the semis.

Athletics: Aussie stars into women’s high jump final

Perhaps unsurprisingly, world champion Eleanor Patterson and Olympic silver medallist Nicola Olyslagers comfortably cleared the qualifying height of 1.81m to reach the final.

Both passed on all the lower heights and simply cleared the mark with their first attempts.

The final isn’t until Saturday night AEST.

Boxing: Rahimi in action in the boxing

Tina Rahimi has just won the first round against England’s Sameenah Toussaint with a superb display of pressure boxing.

The Englishwoman is trying to pick the Aussie off, but she can’t live with her at the moment.

Excellent stuff from the Aussie.

Athletics: Men’s decathlon update, Aussies well placed

The high jump has just got underway for the decathlon, featuring Aussies Cedric Dubler, Daniel Golubovic and Alec Diamond.

Diamond is currently sitting in second spot overall, just behind Lindon Victor of Grenada having completed the 100m, long jump and shot putt.

Diamond has also pulled out some of the all time facial expressions of the competition so far, which is great to see.

Taliqua Clancy and Mariafe Artacho del Solar scored their third straight-sets win in the beach volleyball, taking down Manolina Konstantinou and  Zoi Konstantopoulou of Cyprus in their final Pool B match.

The Olympic silver medallists are yet to drop a set as they head into the quarter-finals at the top of their pool.

The men’s team of Chris McHugh and and Paul Burnett are also in the quarters with a perfect record of three straight 2-0 wins.

Netball: Diamonds suffer shock loss to Jamaica

Jamaica had never beaten Australia at netball in the Commonwealth Games, and when they trailed by six goals heading into the final quarter of an enthralling match overnight, I’d imagine they thought it would stay that way.

But a stirring effort from the team, led by Jhaniele Fowler with 47 goals, ensured that the Jamaicans scored a tremendous upset victory, 57-55.

“It’s surreal, we’ve not beaten Australia at a Commonwealth Games and to come here and do it with an incredible team … and prove everyone wrong was really good,” Fowler said.

“Most definitely it does mean more [to beat Australia].

“Australia is number one and if we beat the number one team that means we can do anything.”

The defeat means that the Diamonds will finish second in the pool and face the winner of the match between England and New Zealand in the semi final.

? Diving: Shixin Li sandwiched between two Englishmen in men’s 1m springboard

Coming off bronze at the world championships earlier this year, Shixin Li goes one better in the 1m springboard in Birmingham.

Li actually won world titles in the event in 2011 and 2013, when he was representing China.

He retired from the sport, but came back to win this silver with a six-dive score of 437.05.

That was 10 points behind England’s Jack David Laugher, who won his third straight Commonwealth Games gold in the event and sixth Games gold overall.

His compatriot Jordan Houlden won bronze.

Australians Emily Ann Boyd, Nikita Hains and Emily Kate Meaney are in the 10m platform final from 4:30am.

Athletics: Barber in, McSweyn and Mitchell out due to illness

Great news that javelin champion Kelsey-Lee Barber WILL compete in Birmingham after testing positive for COVID just before the Games started.

But a real blow for Australia with Kathryn Mitchell, who won javelin gold on the Gold Coast in 2018, and 1500m runner Stewart McSweyn both out of the competition.

Athletics Australia says Mitchell fell sick with an unknown virus while travelling to the UK from the US, and McSweyn is still recovering from a bout of influenza and couldn’t travel.

Decathlete Ash Moloney (who you might remember from this magic moment with teammate Cedric Dubler at the Tokyo Olympics) has also withdrawn due to injury, as has runner Riley Day.

Boxing: Mixed success for Australia in the boxing

Aussie flyweight Alex Winwood came up short in his quarter-final contest, getting knocked out by Zambia’s Patrick Chinyemba in the second round of their match up.

It was better news in the heavyweights though, as Edgardo Coumi forced the referee to intervene in his quarter-final against Anguillan Japheth Olton.

Featherweight Tina Rahimi will be up very shortly, so we’ll keep an eye on her match against England’s Sameenah Toussaint.

? Cycling: Rohan Dennis wins the men’s time trial

It was great news in the men’s time trial too, as Rohan Dennis claimed gold in a dramatic race against the clock.

Wales’ Geraint Thomas backed up his Tour de France third place with a bronze medal, but that came after he crashed in the opening stages of his effort.

Thomas finished 28 seconds behind Dennis after his crash cost him more than 30 seconds.

England’s Fred Wright took silver, 26 seconds back from Dennis.

The three medalists were streets ahead of the rest of the field, with Thomas holding a near two-minute advantage over fourth-placed Aaron Gate of New Zealand.

Australia’s Lucas Plapp finished fifth.

Pre-race favourite Grace Brown has not disappointed in the women’s time trial, smashing the opposition to win the gold medal.

Just four days after the conclusion of the Tour de France Femmes, Brown completed the 28.8-kilometre course over 30 seconds faster than England’s Anna Henderson.

Fellow Aussies Georgia Baker and Sarah Roy were fourth and ninth respectively.
