Complete Guide: Malta Travel Cost | 2022

Malta is a small island country located in the Mediterranean Sea. It is known for its stunning beaches, historic architecture, and delicious food.

If you’re thinking of traveling to Malta, you may be wondering how much money you’ll need to budget for your trip.

PSSST. Your travel medical insurance can now cover COVID-19!

If you grab SafetyWing Nomad Insurance, it’ll be covered just like other illnesses. I’ve been using it since 2019 and I can assure you it’s the perfect solution for nomads like you and me.

In this guide, we’ll take a look at some of the prices you can expect to pay in Malta, and provide some tips on how to save money while traveling there.

The content is divided into multiple parts to help you budget for everything (flights, accommodation, activities, food, etc.).

How To Prepare Your Budget For Malta

The first thing to do is to grab a piece of paper, open Google Docs or open a spreadsheet. Pick your favorite method to take some notes.

Then, you need to start looking into the length of your trip. For example, a shorter trip will be cheaper than a longer one.

Write down the ideal length and write the following:

  • Flights
  • Accommodation
  • Activities
  • Transportation
  • Food and drinks
  • Other (this includes souvenirs, visas, etc.)

Now that you are ready to take some notes, let’s see them individually.

Malta

Flights To Malta

The cost of your flight will obviously depend on where you are flying from.

Malta is well-connected, with direct flights from many European countries. If you are flying from Europe, you can expect to pay around €60-500 for a round-trip.

If you’re on a budget, we recommend you visit Malta during winter. Flight prices are usually much cheaper in January. Although, it might not be for everyone if you wish to enjoy the sea while visiting Malta.

You can use websites like Skyscanner or Google Flights to find the best deals on airfare. Once you know how much your flights will cost, you can start thinking about other aspects of your trip.

So go ahead, and check the price of flights. Decide if you need to bring a piece of check-in luggage too because this can influence the flight price.

Make sure to bookmark this page so you can return to it.

Accommodation In Malta

Malta has many accommodation options, from camping and hostels to apartments and 5-star hotels. The prices obviously vary depending on the type of accommodation you choose.

If you want to save money, hostels and camping are the cheapest options. A bed in a dorm room in a hostel costs around €15 per night. You can find some good hostels in Malta here.

If you are traveling with your family or friends and you want more privacy, you can look for apartments or holiday homes. These usually cost around €80-120 per night.

If you want to stay in a hotel, prices start at around €60 per night for a basic room and go up to several hundred euros for luxury accommodations.

To find the best deals on accommodation, we recommend using websites like Airbnb, Booking.com, Hostelworld, or Agoda.

Now have a look at your dates to see how much accommodation will cost. Depending on the season, prices can vary.

Malta

Activities In Malta

Malta has a lot to offer in terms of activities, from sightseeing and exploring historical sites to swimming in the Mediterranean Sea and going on boat trips.

If you want to visit the most popular tourist attractions, we recommend getting a Malta Discount Card. This pass costs €25 and gives you discounts to many of Malta’s museums, historical sites and activities.

Some other activities you can do in Malta include swimming, hiking, fishing, and diving. Prices for these activities vary depending on where you go and what equipment you need.

To get an idea of the prices, a boat trip costs around €30, depending on the tour.

When budgeting for activities, decide if you want to focus on free activities or if you will join a tour. You can explore different tours available in Malta on GetYourGuide.

That said, you’ll need to keep transportation in mind too. For example, if you plan on visiting an attraction, think of how to get there. Are you planning on using public transportation, or will you rent a car?

Let’s talk about transportation.

Transportation In Malta

Malta is a small island, so it is possible to walk or cycle around some areas. However, if you want to explore more of the island or you are short on time, you can use public transport or rent a car.

Public transportation in Malta consists of buses and taxis. The price of the bus changes depending on the season.

During winter, a bus ticket costs EUR 1.50. During summer, it costs EUR 2, and at night, it costs EUR 3. You can also buy a longer pass for unlimited travel for 7 days. This cost EUR 21 for an adult and EUR 15 for a child.

Take a look at the locations where they sell the public transportation cards here.

Another option is to rent a car. Car rental prices start at around €20 per day. You can browse your options on DiscoverCars.com.

But keep in mind that parking in Malta can be expensive. So if you’re planning on renting a car, make sure to keep in mind the cost of parking. That said, you should also make sure your hotel offers parking on-site.

Food And Drinks In Malta

Malta has a lot of great restaurants, bars, and cafes. The prices for food and drinks obviously vary depending on where you go, but you can expect to pay around €10-20 for a meal in a restaurant.

If you want to save money, you can also get snacks and drinks from supermarkets.

When it comes to nightlife, Malta has something for everyone. You can find bars and clubs that suit your taste and budget.

If you’re on a budget, make sure to pick accommodation or a hostel with a kitchen to cook your own meals. While you may not cook all your meals, you can save a bit of money here and there.

Other Expenses In Malta

There are other expenses that you need to keep in mind when budgeting for your trip to Malta. These include things like souvenirs, tipping, and visa fees (if you need a visa, obviously).

Souvenirs can be quite expensive in Malta, so if you’re on a budget, we recommend only buying a few small items. Tipping is not required in Malta, but it’s always appreciated if you have good service.

And finally, if you need a visa to enter Malta, make sure to get one. Verify if you need a visa on iVisa.

Budgeting For Your Trip To Malta

Now that you know the accommodation, activities, transportation, and food and drinks prices in Malta, you can start planning your budget.

To give you an idea, a one-week trip to Malta would cost around €700-1000, depending on your accommodation, activity choices, and where you’re flying from.

So, go ahead and write down all the costs for the things we’ve mentioned above. Calculate the total and add a bit more to have a buffer. If the total suits your budget, go ahead and start booking your trip to Malta.

Malta

Final Thoughts On Malta Vacation Cost

Malta is a beautiful island with a lot to offer. From its stunning beaches to its vibrant nightlife, there’s something for everyone in Malta.

When budgeting for your trip, make sure to keep the accommodation, activities, transportation, food and drinks, and other expenses in mind. With a bit of planning, you can have a fantastic trip to Malta without breaking the bank.
