HBO has ordered an eight-episode drama series based on “Crazy Rich Asians,” bringing back stars Constance Wu, Henry Golding and Michelle Yeoh for a continuation of the hit 2018 film.

The series will pick up after the events of the movie, which was based on Kevin Kwan’s bestselling novel. Wu, Golding and Ronny Chieng will return as series regulars, while Yeoh will appear in a recurring role, HBO announced Thursday.
Adele Lim, who co-wrote the original film, will serve as showrunner and executive producer. Kwan, director Jon M. Chu and producers Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson will executive produce the series.
The announcement marks the next chapter for a franchise that became a cultural touchstone for Asian representation in Hollywood. The 2018 romantic comedy followed Rachel Chu, played by Wu, a New York professor who discovers that her boyfriend, Nick Young, played by Golding, comes from one of Singapore’s wealthiest families.
The film grossed more than $230 million worldwide and featured a predominantly Asian cast at a time when Hollywood faced renewed scrutiny over its lack of Asian representation.
Lim said the series would offer more room to explore the characters and the world established in Kwan’s novels.
Chu, who directed the original film, also welcomed the reunion, saying audiences had been asking for a sequel for years.
A premiere date for the series has not been announced.
