Day or Road trip from Las Vegas to Grand Canyon (Guided Experience)

Love it? Share it!

One of the most popular day trips from Las Vegas to the amazing Grand Canyon National Park. You can visit the South or the West Rim and make the most of your adventure with a few stops along the way.

If you wish to enjoy a day or a road trip from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon, particularly the West Rim, then you will find this post useful. We took a day tour from our hotel in Las Vegas, and it was perfect.

When pressed for time, this is a great way to enjoy road stops (such as the Hoover Dam and other photo spots) without having to drive all the way and get back on the same day. Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon West Rim is about 2 hours, and the South Rim is 4 hours, one way respectively.

For an easy day trip from Las Vegas to Grand Canyon West Rim by road, consider this shared experience. You will be led by an expert guide and coach operator who will drive you to the Canyon and back in under 5 hours.

This day tour experience is not intrusive at all, meaning you will get free time to enjoy a short hike in the Grand Canyon and take in the views. The experience also includes lunch as well as time for quick photo stops along the way. Here is what you will get to discover on your journey:

1. Starting from Las Vegas

Kick off your morning with a departure from Las Vegas. The meeting point is at the Treasure Island Hotel Tour Bus Pickup Area. This is very conveniently located if you are staying on the Strip.

The coach we used was clean and comfortable with free WiFi, and they even played a video of the history of the Grand Canyon. We found it to be very informative.

2. Photo stop at the Arizona Joshua Tree Forest

The bus will make its first stop at the Arizona Joshua Tree Forest for photos. You can get down, stretch your legs, and take pictures of the amazing trees. These grounds are open to the public, but are protected by a fence. There are no entry fees.

Just in that area alone, you will find trees of different shapes and silhouettes. Plus, there are lots of info boards that will give you details about the area and the trees themselves.

3. Grand Canyon Stop: Eagle Point

You will be arriving at the Grand Canyon next. You will be here for about 4 hours.

The first stop here is Eagle Point. Note this, as mentioned earlier, this is on the West Rim.

Although not a part of the National Park (Hualapai Reservation), Eagle Point offers spectacular views of the stones. Here you will get to see eagle-shaped mountains, all naturally formed over the centuries.

The stone formations are unique and marvelous. It has great cultural significance too – for the Hualapai, this area is sacred, and the eagle is said to have saved their ancestors. In here, you can also visit a Native American village where traditional houses from multiple tribes are on display. You can also enjoy authentic daily cultural performances here.

4. Grand Canyon Stop: Skywalk

The next stop here is the famous Skywalk. When booking the tour, ensure you choose the option for SkyWalk entry tickets. We recommend reserving your tickets in advance so that you don’t have to wait in line there or miss the amazing views!

The SkyWalk is a must-visit attraction in the Grand Canyon. This is popular because of the expansive glass walkway that extends out over the edge of the canyon, giving you a front row view of the canyon.

There is a cafe, restrooms, and a gift shop on-site. Note that bags, phones, or cameras are not allowed on the Skywalk.

5. Grand Canyon Stop: Guano Point

After SkyWalk, make your way to the Guano Point. This high-elevation viewpoint is managed by the Hualapai Tribe, and its entry fee is included in the West Rim admission tickets.

Here you will get to enjoy 360-degree panoramic views of the Colorado River and the Canyons. If you have time on your hands, you can enjoy a 0.5 to 0.8-mile hike to a high-point butte offering unobstructed views of the area.

Other than the undisputed views, this area also features a historic mining site. It is home to the remnants of an old tramway system, which was built by the U.S. Guano Corporation in the 1950s.

6. Lunch Stop

After all the hiking and sightseeing, this is the perfect moment to stop and grab a bite to eat. You have the option to reserve dining while booking the tour.

If you are not choosing lunch, then we recommend heading to the cafe at the Guano Point after your hike. It is more of a grab-and-go/ walk‑up barbecue stand where you can buy meaty plates (they also have vegetarian options) as well as drinks.

After food pick-up, find a picnic bench and enjoy your meal! The cafe offers outdoor seating with unmatched views of the Canyons.

7. Quick stop at the Hemenway Park, Boulder City

Get comfortable inside the coach/bus as it makes its way to the next stop at the Hemenway Park.

Hemenway Park in Boulder City is a great road trip stop from the Grand Canyon to Las Vegas. It is also conveniently located near the Hoover Dam, so don’t miss out on it.

This public park is popular not for the mountain or canyon’s sweeping views, but it is home to big horn sheep that gather here from the nearby hills. The gazing sight is very admirable – so keep your camera ready. The big horns are quite accustomed to humans.

8. Stop for a photo of Hoover Dam on the way back

One of the most memorable stops on your journey from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon West Rim is the legendary Hoover Dam—and even a short visit here is worth it.

Built during the Great Depression and completed in 1936, the Hoover Dam is an engineering marvel that sits right on the border of Nevada and Arizona. It holds back the mighty Colorado River, creating the vast Lake Mead, the largest reservoir in the United States.

Even if your tour only stops for 15–30 minutes, you’ll still get a sense of its scale and significance. Typically, you’ll walk along the pedestrian bridge or viewpoints for panoramic views. You can snap photos of the dam and the surrounding desert landscape, including the Colorado River flowing below it.

Travel Tips for a Day Trip from Las Vegas to Grand Canyon West Rim

If you’re planning to visit the Grand Canyon West Rim from Las Vegas in a single day, taking a guided coach tour can make the experience far more relaxed and efficient—especially since the drive is long and the desert terrain can be tiring.

With a day tour, you can enjoy the road trip stops without driving (or car rental/insurance issues).

1. Skip the Stress of Driving

The journey to the West Rim takes around 2–2.5 hours each way, and that’s without stops. Booking a coach tour means you can sit back, enjoy the views, and avoid navigating unfamiliar desert roads or dealing with parking once you arrive.

2. Choose Tours with Scenic Stops

Many tours include bonus stops at places like:

  • Hoover Dam
  • Lake Mead
  • Joshua Tree Forest

These breaks make the journey feel like part of the experience rather than just transit.

3. Start Early (It’s a Full-Day Trip)

Most tours depart early morning (around 6:00 –7:00 AM) and return by evening. Plan your night before accordingly—you’ll want to be well-rested to enjoy the long but rewarding day.

4. Pack Smart for the Desert Climate

Even on a guided tour, you’ll spend time outdoors. Bring:

  • Sunscreen & sunglasses ☀️
  • A hat or a light scarf
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • A refillable water bottle

Temperatures can swing a lot between morning and afternoon.

5. Check What’s Included

Not all tours are the same. Some include:

  • Entry tickets to the West Rim (which this tour does)
  • Skywalk access (at the Grand Canyon Skywalk)
  • Lunch or snacks

Double-check so you don’t end up paying extra on-site.

6. Know the Difference: West Rim vs South Rim

The West Rim is closer to Las Vegas and ideal for day trips, while the South Rim (in Grand Canyon National Park) is farther and better suited for overnight stays. If you’re short on time, West Rim is the practical choice.

Views of the Grand Canyon South Rim

Road trips and day tours to the South Rim will take about 4+ hours one way.

7. Bring Cash or Cards for Extras

Souvenirs, snacks, or optional upgrades (like SkyWalk and lunch) aren’t always included. Having a payment option handy helps you stay flexible.

8. Don’t Expect Railings Everywhere

Parts of the West Rim are more natural and less developed than other sections of the canyon. Stay mindful near edges and follow safety instructions during your stops, especially at the Guano Point.

9. Charge Your Phone (You’ll Want Photos!)

From desert landscapes to canyon viewpoints, there are plenty of photo opportunities throughout the journey—especially during scenic stops. There are charging ports on the coach as well.
