Derek Fisher Discusses Lakers’ Defensive Strategy Amidst Concerns
Former Los Angeles Lakers player Derek Fisher has provided insight into the team’s approach to addressing its defensive challenges, suggesting that their strength lies primarily in their offensive capabilities.
The Lakers faced a tense moment during their matchup against the Toronto Raptors, with sports analyst JJ Redick expressing his frustration over the team’s defensive lapses that allowed a fourth-quarter lead to slip away. Although the Lakers ultimately secured a victory, the late-game defensive breakdown overshadowed their earlier efforts.
Defensive statistics reveal that the Lakers rank as a mid-tier team, currently holding the 16th position in the league with a Defensive Rating of 114.4 points allowed per 100 possessions. Redick emphasized the need for a more robust defensive strategy moving forward.
Fisher Highlights Offensive Strength Amidst Defensive Concerns
Speaking on 97.1 The Fan, Fisher acknowledged the team’s defensive shortcomings but underscored the significance of their offensive prowess, particularly with star player Luka Dončić. Fisher believes that Dončić, complemented by Austin Reaves, can significantly weaken opponents’ morale.
“While we often discuss the Lakers’ commitment to creating a strong defensive identity, the reality is that their best defense may actually be their offense,” Fisher stated. “I’m not sure they’ll develop into a lockdown defensive unit, but the pressure they exert offensively is what can demoralize other teams.”
Starting Strong: A Key Tactic for the Lakers
After the Lakers’ decisive 138-117 victory against the Miami Heat, Fisher elaborated on how Dončić’s scoring capability exacerbates the situation for opposing teams when he starts strong. “Their ability to quickly establish a lead creates immediate pressure and anxiety for their opponents,” he explained. “Teams find it challenging to keep pace when Luka begins putting up points early in the game.”
Dončić is currently enjoying an exceptional season, averaging 38.3 points per game, including a remarkable 42-point performance against the Heat. Notably, he has surpassed the 40-point mark in four of his last five outings.
Teammate Sandro Mamukelashvili has referred to Dončić’s talent as ‘unexplainable,’ while former Laker Sasha Vujacic compared his competitive nature to that of the legendary Kobe Bryant.
