CALDWELL COUNTY, Ky. — Disaster relief continues for those in the region after severe storms and tornados during Memorial Day weekend. That’s why American Red Cross set up a Command Outreach Center Wednesday to assist those impacted — one of those centers is in the Princeton-Caldwell County area, which saw an EF-3 tornado.
Owen Morris came home to find his entire garage ruined and damage to his home after that tornado.
“Well, I told my wife before we were pulled back in… I said, ‘Before we get in here to just let you know our daughter safe, we’re safe, I said everything else can be replaced,'” he said.
Despite facing some damage, Morris considered himself lucky, especially with some in the county losing their entire home. The American Red Cross West Kentucky Chapter Executive Director Misty Thomas said that loss is why they deployed a Command Outreach Center to Caldwell County.
“What we’re hoping to achieve is really to start the first steps of their build helping them build their recovery plan, let them know what kind of paperwork they’re gonna need,” said Thomas.
She explained that the center gives those impacted a chance to talk one on one with a Red Cross case worker. “We’re going to look at their address, and we’re gonna see what our damage assessment is. And if they are at a major destroyed level of assessment, then we’re going to be able to start administering some financial assistance to them,”
Thomas hopes with the center Red Cross will make the recovery process smoother.
“We want to make sure they understand what kind of paperwork they’re going to need through this recovery process. And just collecting that type of data that really is going to benefit them through their recovery process so we can continue to make those connections for them,” she said.
Red Cross will set up the center again from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday at the Caldwell County EMS building. If you cannot make it to the center just call 800-Red Cross for assistance. There’s also a command center set up in hard-hit Dawson Springs in Hopkins County.
