Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly met with officials from ACWA Power to review the latest developments in cooperation on seawater desalination projects, as Egypt seeks to expand its desalination capacity and localise related industries.
The meeting was held at the government headquarters in the New Capital and was attended by Samir Sarhan, Executive Director of ACWA Power; Hashem Ghobashi, Regional President of ACWA Power for the Middle East, Africa, and Southeast Asia; Ahmed Omran, Deputy Minister of Housing for Utilities; Hassan Amin, CEO and Regional Director of ACWA Power Egypt; and Assem Shokry, Deputy Chairman of the Holding Company for Water and Wastewater.
Madbouly welcomed the ACWA Power delegation and highlighted the company’s ongoing cooperation with Egypt in seawater desalination, citing its extensive experience in the sector.
He said President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi attaches significant importance to seawater desalination, adding that Egypt is expanding desalination projects while working to localise industries and technologies related to the sector.
“Our current objective is to secure the best offers from qualified companies to begin implementing these projects,” Madbouly said, noting that Egypt is targeting the production of 10 million cubic metres of desalinated water per day.
He added that the government plans to expand desalination capacity through modern plants using advanced international technologies and in cooperation with major specialised companies.
Sarhan, meanwhile, reaffirmed ACWA Power’s commitment to deepening its cooperation with Egypt, highlighting the company’s investments in renewable energy projects in the country.
He also highlighted the ongoing cooperation between ACWA Power and Egypt to implement a number of seawater desalination projects aimed at increasing the country’s production capacity in the sector, describing Egypt as a trusted partner for the company.
The meeting also addressed the importance of desalination projects as part of Egypt’s efforts to support sustainable urban development, expand new cities, and develop coastal areas. Such projects represent a sustainable solution for securing the water resources needed to support the country’s development plans.
The two sides also discussed investment opportunities in the desalination sector, particularly in light of the government’s efforts to increase private-sector participation and leverage the expertise of specialised companies, while supporting the localisation of industries associated with desalination.
