Berlin (dpa) – Germany has increased its aid to help combat the Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) by eleven million euros. This was announced by Development Minister Reem Alabali Radovan on regional broadcaster RBB (Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg). “We have to remain capable of action, especially in crisis situations. Above all, it’s a question now of working out how we can achieve as much as possible despite having fewer resources available.” The ministry confirmed the additional funding in response to a dpa enquiry.
The minister described the situation in Congo as extremely dramatic. “We can now assume that this is the worst Ebola outbreak in the country’s history.” She also said that the situation was compounded by the armed conflicts raging in the country. “It’s incredibly difficult for the medical teams there to get to the people at all.” Germany is supplying equipment, providing mobile laboratories and training healthcare workers to educate people in the DRC about the disease, Radovan explained.
