Berlin (dpa) – On Ukraine’s national holiday, Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock paid tribute to the country’s defensive struggle against Russia. “Today you celebrate the independence and freedom of your nation. These are precisely the principles that your entire country is defending in its courageous struggle against Russia’s brutal aggression,” wrote the Chancellor. Foreign Minister Baerbock praised the Ukrainians’ courage and “irrepressible will to live in peace”. On the war, she wrote: “Each day is one day too many. Each day obliges us to do everything in our power to ensure that Ukraine can live in peace once more as we do.”
On Ukraine’s Independence Day, numerous people gathered in front of the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin as a sign of support for the country under attack by Russia. Russia began its invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022. On Thursday, Ukraine celebrated its national holiday in commemoration of the country’s declaration of independence on 24 August 1991.
