James May was reportedly assisted by paramedics before being taken to hospital for a brain scan and X-rays, but was given the all-clear and able to continue filming “a day or so later”.
Details have emerged of a high-speed crash during filming of The Grand Tour that saw host James May rushed to hospital with a “bloodied” head and broken rib.
The 59-year-old presenter has confirmed he is “perfectly OK” after the incident, which he said happened “a while back”.
A source told The Sun the crash occurred when May and co-hosts Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond were filming for the Amazon Prime Video show at the decommissioned Olavsvern naval base near the city of Tromsø in Norway.
The trio were performing a drag-style race which involved speeding through an unlit tunnel towards a rock wall, with the lights only turning on in the last few seconds.

May reportedly braked too late while travelling at 121kph, and “jackknifed” into the wall.
According to The Sun’s source, May “smashed his head quite hard in the impact, and was bloodied by it”, was complaining of pain in his back and neck, and broke “at least one rib”.

A source told The Sun the crash occurred when May and co-hosts Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond were filming for the Amazon Prime Video show at the decommissioned Olavsvern naval base in Norway.

May addressed the report in a tweet: “Thank you for all your kind comments and funny jokes re my crash, but it was a while back, not that bad, and I’m perfectly OK.”
In reference to the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 8 he was driving at the time, he added: “Apologies to Evo fans for binning the VIII.”
While it is unclear exactly when the incident happened, the trio were filming in Norway in March. A fan posted on Reddit at the time that he had met Clarkson and Hammond at a local gas station, but May hadn’t been there because he had “crashed the Evo while they were in Tromsø”.
Of the Grand Tour trio, Hammond is best known for his crashes, including an accident during filming for Top Gear in 2006 which left him in a coma for two weeks.
