Berlin (dpa) – It is now possible to travel throughout Germany by bus and train for 49 euros a month, after the Bundestag approved the law for the new ticket deal on Friday. Things will start moving quickly, with tickets going on sale on Monday. The programme really sets off on 1 May, when you can use the tickets to travel all over Germany.
The 49 euro tickets are intended to follow on from the popular 9 euro tickets which were available for three months last summer. They were designed to ease the burden on the public in the face of rising prices for electricity, food, heating and transport. The 49 Euro Ticket is aimed at making it more attractive to travel by bus and train and to encourage as many people to switch away from their cars. Public transport is to become more affordable not only for millions of commuters, but also for the less well-off. The aim is also to make public transport easier to use, with a single ticket for the whole of the country regardless of fare zones and price conditions.
“This new ticket will open up opportunities for many people to get around Germany, from day-to-day travel to leisure and holidays,” said Federal Minister for Transport, Volker Wissing.
