Former Kaizer Chiefs striker Lehlohonolo Majoro has backed Orlando Pirates to successfully defend their Betway Premiership title, although he expects another fiercely contested race this season.
The retired forward believes it is a positive sign for South African football to see Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns, and Kaizer Chiefs occupying the top three positions, as it reflects a stronger, more competitive league.
“Having seen Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns, and Kaizer Chiefs finish first, second, and third respectively, it’s really encouraging for us as football fanatics because it’s been a long time since we’ve seen a table look like that,” Majoro said as per IOL.
Majoro also expects teams outside the traditional “Big Three” to challenge for the top positions this season.
Ex-Chiefs and Pirates star expects tough season
He singled out AmaZulu under coach Arthur Zwane, while also highlighting Sekhukhune United, Polokwane City, and Stellenbosch FC as sides capable of making an impact.
“Not undermining other teams—we’ve seen AmaZulu under Coach Arthur [Zwane] putting their hands up to showcase that they’re not just here to add numbers,” Majoro explained.
“Sekhukhune [United] is among those; Polokwane [City] has always been a surprise package, and for the first time, we saw Stellenbosch finish outside the top eight.
“I’m sure they will want to fight their way back into the top eight and return to winning ways.”
Despite expecting strong competition across the league, the former Chiefs and Pirates striker believes the Buccaneers have what it takes to retain their crown.
“I have no doubt that the Big Three will battle it out until the end.
“Hopefully, we will see Orlando Pirates defend their trophy again this season,” he concluded.
