KAMPALA – Indian Women Association (IWA) has pledged to continue refurbishing Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) schools and hospitals.

This was revealed on Sunday by IWA chairperson, Falguni Patel, during the annual Bazaar, which was organised for small entrepreneurs to sell and promote their products.

“IWA is instrumental in refurbishing KCCA schools and hospitals, it also awards scholarships to deserving Ugandan school students, thereby, promoting education. We shall continue supporting Government in those key areas,” she pledged.

The bazaar is being organised by IWA after three years due to the COVID-19 pandemic which hit the country and the World at large.

No wonder why over 1500 Indians turned up for the event at Kampala Parents School grounds in Kampala to showcase their products.

The entrepreneurs showcased different products including cultural clothes, food, earrings, and local herbs, among other items, as their children played on a bouncy castle.

“The bazaar encourages women to come forward and help promote themselves as prospective entrepreneurs,” she noted.

Falguni also disclosed that the association constructed a maternity ward in Kitebi hospital.

She stressed that IWA conducts several programs to help underprivileged women and schedules medical camps so that members and unprivileged Ugandans access free eye check-ups.

IWA also pledged to continue contributing to heart surgeries for needy Ugandans, to the Indian Association of Uganda.

Agenda

As the new chairperson of IWA, Falguni said her priority is to serve Ugandan needy women by organizing medical camps in upcountry and local markets.

She revealed that starting Saturday (July 9), this week, they will teach Indian women art and craft work, cooking local food, among others.

During the event, the High Commissioner of India to Uganda, A. Ajay kumar applauded Ugandan Government for creating a favourable business environment for the Indian community.

“I am surprised to see many Indian entrepreneurs do home-based business in Uganda,” he said.

Ajay added, “We are opening our economy and adapting to social life after the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, events like this are very significant at this stage of time,” he said.

The Chairman of Indian Association of Uganda, Mohan Rao revealed that the association in conjunction with Samtha Foundation, Potatory, Indian High Commission and Ugandan Government, is expected to host 54 African countries for a business summit in October, this year.

“The summit will help bring more investors to Uganda to do business,” he said. He also said they intend to hold East African sports meeting this year.

Rao further disclosed that since the association has marked 100 years of existence, they have started offering free heart surgeries to vulnerable Ugandans in India.

He revealed that they are targeting 100 Ugandans this year although so far 24 have undergone surgery.

According to the latest WHO data published in 2020 Coronary Heart Disease Deaths in Uganda reached 8,784 or 4.23% of total deaths.

The Indian Women Association chairperson, Patel Falguni, said they conduct Bazaar every year to give entrepreneurs opportunity to showcase their products so that they can get business.

She said exhibiting products helps entrepreneurs to promote and get market for them.
