Kaizer Chiefs forgotten academy star set to join new PSL club, as per FARPost.
Chiefs graduate Lungelo Bhengu looks poised to reunite with his former mentor, Ernst Middendorp, at Cape Town Spurs. This talented defender was spotted training with the club on Thursday, signalling a potential move to the Motsepe Foundation Championship.
Bhengu, who rose through the ranks at Chiefs alongside players like Nkosingiphile Ngcobo, recently parted ways with Casric Stars in the second tier. Before that, he made a significant impact at Maritzburg United, where Middendorp recognized and utilised his versatility. The German tactician often deployed Bhengu as a right-back, central defender, and even in midfield, highlighting the 23-year-old’s adaptability. He made 30 appearances for Maritzburg, showcasing his potential on the field.
Promising start at Kaizer Chiefs academy
Bhengu’s football journey began at the Chiefs academy from 2015 to 2018, where he honed his skills and gained invaluable experience. He later moved to Highlands Park, representing their reserve team before earning his promotion to Maritzburg United’s senior squad in the 2019/20 season. He marked his debut against Golden Arrows, a pivotal milestone in his burgeoning career.
Now a free agent, Bhengu is eager to revive his career under Middendorp’s mentorship, who has a proven track record of developing young talent. A move to Cape Town Spurs could offer him the ideal platform to showcase his skills and contribute to the club’s success. It’s likely that Spurs will offer Bhengu a short-term contract to prove himself this season.
Spurs’ quest for improvement
Cape Town Spurs have struggled at the start of the season, currently sitting 10th on the Motsepe Foundation table. After being relegated last season, the team aims for a quick return to the top-flight. But has faced challenges, winning only two matches, drawing three, and losing three so far.
Bhengu’s potential addition will significantly bolster the squad. As they actively work to improve their standings and pursue their goal of promotion. His versatility and experience can provide the team with much-needed depth and skill. Helping them overcome early-season challenges and climb the league table. As Spurs seek to solidify their position and return to the top-flight. Bringing in a talented player like Bhengu will enhance their chances of success.
