An investigation into the death of Kenyan boxer Jacob Oyoko has found the late fighter had pre-existing lung issues that were aggravated by the boxing match.
Oyoko died in hospital after a stoppage defeat on the weekend, sending shockwaves through the country’s sporting community, and reigniting urgent debate about safety standards in professional boxing.
The Kenya Professional Boxing Commission says a post mortem indicated the late boxer had pre-existing lung issues leading into the clash.

Oyoko had no prior professional experience and accepted the fight on two days notice.
His main source of income was private security and had been in the amateur ranks with the Boxing Federation of Kenya before stepping away from competition and later returning.
The fact that Oyoko was given a professional bout without a proper camp or preparation has prompted widespread concern about licensing and sanctioning practices.

Video of the fight shows Oyoko absorbing sustained punishment as he is backed into the ropes. At several points, he appears unable to defend himself but instead of stopping the fight, the referee signalled for the action to continue.
Only after further punishment did the referee finally step in to stop the fight.
“It is sad to witness any boxer losing his life in the sport and even if he is not under our umbrella, it is quite unfortunate,” a spokesperson for the the Boxing Federation of Kenya said.
“We extend our deepest condolences to his family and the boxing community.”
According to the commission, emergency medical protocols were immediately activated at ringside, with Oyoko receiving urgent care, including CPR, oxygen support, and transfer to hospital.
Investigations into the the fighter’s death remain ongoing.
