Malaysia Tech Sector Outlook Positive but Risks Loom, Analysts Warn – IAA

Analysts maintain a broadly positive view on Malaysia’s technology sector, but warn that concentrated AI gains, cost pressures, and geopolitical risks are creating a divided market.

Malaysia’s technology sector is expected to sustain its recovery into 2026, with artificial intelligence emerging as the dominant structural growth driver across the semiconductor supply chain — though analysts warn that benefits are becoming increasingly uneven and external risks are mounting.

Apex Securities, in a note published on 9 April and cited in media reports, said structural demand recovery is broadening across AI infrastructure, optical connectivity, advanced packaging, and semiconductor back-end equipment. Based on site visits and company results briefings, the research house identified three consistent trends: order pipelines remain healthy, capacity expansion plans are progressing, and customer qualification cycles are gradually translating into revenue.

Advertisments

AI Proxies in Focus
Apex Securities has maintained an “overweight” rating on the Malaysian technology sector, citing the AI-driven capital expenditure cycle and demand for advanced packaging as structural tailwinds. The research house pointed to leading global firms such as Nvidia, which expects an agentic AI inflection, and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co, which is guiding for nearly 30 percent revenue growth in 2026, as indicators of the demand trajectory feeding through to Malaysian suppliers.

Locally, Apex Securities expects ViTrox Corp to benefit from a strong pipeline in AI server inspection, while MI Technovation is positioned to ride demand for high-bandwidth memory and advanced packaging through its solder ball and die sorter business. Frontken Corp Bhd is forecast to record a standout year as its key Taiwan-based customer ramps up two-nanometre node production, and is considered the most insulated among coverage names against ringgit exchange-rate movement.

Concentration Risk and Cost Headwinds
The positive headline masks a divergence that analysts say investors cannot ignore. Kenanga Research noted that gains are becoming increasingly concentrated, as AI-driven demand tightens memory supply and shifts benefits towards AI infrastructure at the expense of non-AI end markets. The research house also cautioned that AI-driven memory spending, while supportive of wafer fab equipment, raises affordability risks and margin pressure across the wider technology chain.

Inari Amertron faces what Apex Securities described as “asymmetric downside”, owing to its exposure to a contracting global smartphone market — projected to shrink by more than 10 percent in 2026 — combined with high sensitivity to ringgit strength. Elevated raw material prices present an additional headwind across the sector, though Apex Securities noted these are more amenable to pass-through, albeit with a lag.

Geopolitical Exposure
MBSB Research separately warned that geopolitical tensions in the Middle East could weigh on global semiconductor demand. Apex Securities forecast a base case of rolling extension of US-Iran negotiations rather than a clean resolution, which it said would sustain current ringgit strength without delivering full input-cost relief. Under an escalation scenario, the research house identified Frontken and Aurelius Technologies as relative beneficiaries — Frontken through refurbishment demand and oil and gas exposure, and Aurelius Technologies through incremental uplift in its oil exploration devices segment as elevated oil prices accelerate operator monitoring expenditure.

Kenanga has downgraded its sector outlook on account of rising external risks, including global memory tightness, supply-chain fragility, and persistent cost pressures across the value chain.
