The Dallas Mavericks have been searching for a running mate for NBA star Luka Doncic for years. They are hoping that Kyrie Irving can become that player after a failed experiment with big man, Kristaps Porzinigs.
These issues have arisen in part because of Jalen Brunson leaving in free agency last offseason, signing a deal with the New York Knicks. However, had the Mavericks’ plans been executed in 2020, none of this likely would have occurred.
During the draft that year, Dallas was trying very hard to move up the board. It was reported last season by ESPN’s Tim MacMahon that the Mavericks had set their sights on Iowa State guard, Tyrese Haliburton.
One offer that Dallas made, according to MacMahon, was to the New York Knicks. They offered Brunson, the No. 18 and No. 31 overall picks in the draft for No. 8 overall. New York declined, using that selection to take Obi Toppin instead.

The Mavericks continued to seek out a trade partner, but nothing materialized. They stuck in their position, selecting Josh Green and Tyrell Terry. Haliburton would end up falling to the Sacramento Kings at No. 12. He has since been traded to the Indiana Pacers, landing there as part of the Domantas Sabonis blockbuster ahead of the 2022 deadline.
While reports like that sometimes come and go, Mavericks owner Mark Cuban recently confirmed. Making an appearance on Patrick Beverley’s podcast, Cuban said his team did everything they could to land Haliburton.
It is certainly surprising that Cuban confirmed the report, as he could be facing a fine as a result. Also interesting is how the pieces have fit together since. Haliburton, Toppin and Rick Carlisle, who was the Mavericks head coach at the time, have all ended up on the Pacers.

Brunson, as stated earlier, ultimately made his way to the Knicks. The Mavericks got nothing what they were seeking, as they are still looking for a long-term partner for Doncic to build their roster around.
