Celtic winger, Mikey Johnston has received FIFA international clearance to represent Republic of Ireland at senior level.
Johnston is currently playing on loan at Portugal’s Vitoria Guimaraes this season after enduring an injury hit campaign at Celtic last season, in which he has now managed three goals and assists apiece in 20 appearances for the Portuguese club.
The 23 year-old however was born in Glasgow so is eligible to represent Scotland which he did at youth level, yet has opted to represent Ireland at international senior level due to his grandparents having been born in Derry.
“I’m delighted to declare for the Republic of Ireland and excited for what my future holds in an Ireland shirt,” commented Johnston upon confirmation of his international allegiance switch by FIFA.
On what it means to finally represent Ireland, Johnston continued: “Myself and my family have always been proud of our Irish roots with my grandad hailing from Derry and to potentially now play for Ireland is something that really excites me.
“It’s up to me now to impress the manager and to get selected to the squad but my focus now is to break into that squad and to make an impact for the team in a big year for the team.
“I’ve always watched the Ireland matches and the atmosphere always looks incredible. I can’t wait to play at the Aviva Stadium and hopefully create some great moments for the team.”
Ireland manager, Stephen Kenny added that Johnston “is an exciting player, a great individual talent” and is “delighted” to welcome him into the squad.
Kenny added that he can’t wait to see Johnston play at Aviva Stadium in Dublin, as he said: “I’m looking forward to seeing him play at the Aviva Stadium, dribbling in the way that he can and we look forward to helping him fulfil his potential in an Ireland shirt.”
Johnston will be eligible to be called up for this month’s friendly against Latvia on 22 March and UEFA Euro 2024 qualifier against France on 27 March.
