If you have to explain modern J-pop to someone who has never heard it before, play them a track by Mrs. Green Apple. I recommend 2018’s “Ao to Natsu.”
Driving forward beat? Check. A soft, ballad-esque break? Check. A sudden jump up an octave? You betcha. Mrs. Green Apple tracks are an exercise in triumphant maximalism; it’s not unusual to hear anything from music boxes to orchestral strings to country-western elements in the group’s songs.
