New jazz season hits right notes | News, Sports, Jobs

Jazz. It is often called a uniquely American music. Born in New Orleans, it is the product of organic mixing of African, Creole and European cultures.

Its popularity spread in America with the minstrel show and the advent of recording. It is interesting, then, to discover that it blossomed, with local flair, in Kansas City, Los Angeles, Paris, Rio de Janeiro, Moscow, Havana, Tokyo, Sydney, and so many other places around the globe. It has proven to be universal and culturally pliable. “Make no mistake,” says Christian McBride, aneight-time Grammy Award-winning bassist from Philadelphia. “This music is for everyone.”

Throughout the world, the jazz club is where jazz is best heard. It offers an opportunity to listen to this music, perhaps with food and a glass of wine, in a setting that is relaxed and conducive. Jazz at Domus Fare is Fredonia’s jazz club, bringing to the community a vivid sampling of this fascinating music. If you have attended any of these jazz nights during the past few years, you would have heard any of a range of musicians on flute, sax, trumpet, flugelhorn, trombone, guitar and voice, often accompanied by Nick Weiser and his talented trio. Domus Fare has hosted 15 different musicians since it began in 2018.

In 2022-23, the programming is more exciting than ever. All the events are on Thursday nights at the Domus Fare Restaurant, 41 W. Main Street, Fredonia, with two shows each night at 5:30 and 8:00.

The new season begins on Oct. 20 with a special event featuring one of the most inventive trumpet players in jazz today. Sean Jones has been a member of Jazz at Lincoln Center with Wynton Marsalis, part of the San Francisco Jazz Collective, soloist with many major orchestras, and a collaborator with the world’s most renowned musicians. Jones is a Professor of Jazz at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore and will appear with the Nick Weiser Trio.

The four events that follow represent the core of the season. The Nick Weiser Quartet will offer a holiday-oriented performance on Dec. 8. The famed Bobby Militello Quartet will appear on Feb. 23. On March 23, in a collaboration with SUNY Fredonia, the exceptional Derrick Gardner, trumpet, will guest with Elliot Scozzaro, saxophone. Then, on April 13, Latin percussionist Marko Marcinko will provide a Cuban groove to make us move our feet.

Another special event will end of the season on May 11. The engaging and gregarious guitarist from Brazil, Diego Figueiredo, and his longtime collaborator Ken Peplowski, clarinet and sax, will amaze us with their showmanship and skill. Ken can be heard on over 400 recordings, and both Diego and Ken independently enjoy international careers.

The Fredonia Jazz Society, which organizes these events, strives to make the series as representative as possible of the breadth of the jazz style, and to make each event distinctive and entertaining. The venue is intimate, and an effort is made to make sure everyone gets a good seat.

Therefore, Jazz at Domus Fare has a tendency to sell out, so getting tickets in advance is highly

recommended.

With an emphasis on high standards and on local and guest artists, the aim is to enhance the quality of life through music and the arts.
