A male presenter has been suspended by the BBC over allegations he gave a young person NZ$72,334 for sexually explicit photos.
Newsable is brought to you by BNZ.
On Newsable today: what’s going on in the BBC scandal? What does the static OCR mean for normal people? How do you stop your mind going all talkback radio when you’re trying to get to sleep? And another edition of Fun Fact Fursday.
Morning team, happy Thursday, the last working day of the week for many of us, and in the spirit: Mānawatia a Matariki!
It’s a long weekend, of course, I’m heading down to Tauranga for the weekend, my girlfriend’s mum has just gotten a new dog, Ellie, and I’m meeting her for the first time.
I’m taking it very seriously as you’d imagine, got my outfit all picked out, I’m just not sure whether to pair the tuxedo with a bow tie or a cravat. Also lingering questions about whether or not to don a cummerbund, and yes that is an actual word, I double-checked the spelling, Google it.
To the show! – and we kick off today with a chat about a very weird story: a BBC presenter has been accused of ‘inappropriate behaviour’ involving a number of young people, as The Sun tabloid revealed earlier this week. That presenter’s identity is an open secret, yet no media have named them so far. Stuff’s Editor-in-Chief National, Bernadette Courtenay – who once worked for a UK tabloid – joins us to explain why.
After that it’s time to check The Pulse with BNZ head of research Stephen Toplis – Stephen casts an eye over the latest OCR announcement which saw the cash rate staying at 5.5 percent, bucking recent trends, and explains what the implications are for everyday Kiwis.
Then Imo and I chat about a piece in The Conversation all about the best ways to stop your mind from racing when you lay your head down to sleep at night, before a special treat: a Fun Fact Friday on a Thursday, and boy oh boy is it a humdinger.
On a related note, I recommend watching Rocky this weekend if you’re looking for movie recommendations. Great film, great score.
Have a goodie, and look out for a couple of special episodes dropping tomorrow and Saturday.
Catch you later,
Emile
