Nicolas Cage’s Malibu driveway collapses into sinkhole and gas leak

Nicolas Cage’s beachfront home was damaged after the driveway collapsed following days of rough surf.

The driveway in front of the Oscar-winning actor’s oceanfront home collapsed, creating a sinkhole. Fox 11 reported that the Los Angeles County Fire Department said it was caused by coastal erosion spurred by a hurricane that formed in the Pacific Ocean, Hurricane Marie, generating big waves and high tides.

Video taken of the home shows a 30 by 30 foot hole in front of the home with the waves and the beams holding up his home visible underneath.

Pieces of the glass fence that once stood in front of the driveway, as well as concrete can be seen in the hole, as orange cones set up along the edge.

NICOLAS CAGE LEADS ALL-STAR CAST IN ‘FORTITUDE,’ A WWII FILM ABOUT THE D-DAY DECEPTION CAMPAIGN

The City of Malibu released a statement regarding the incident on X, writing they responded to the collapse of the driveway “and resulting gas leak” in the early hours of Tuesday morning, noting the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and the Los Angeles County Fire Department “responded and closed the private road, and identified the gas leak.”

“The City’s Building Safety Division and Southern California Gas Company are working to assess the situation,” they wrote. “At this time, the City red tagged five homes (prohibited entry). The City’s Building Safety Division and Southern California Gas Company will continue to assess the situation to determine safety concerns for the surrounding area, and will provide updates as they become available.”

No evacuations have been ordered in the area. However, the city added that they are “actively monitoring and responding to” other issues associated with coastal erosion, specifically in areas along the “Pacific Coast Highway in the Palisades Fire burn area and at Westward Beach due to strong waves and high tides.”

“The City is preparing for potential strong storms, strong waves, heavy rain, mudslides, and coastal erosion that are possible along the entire Southern California coast due to the forecast strong El Niño conditions,” they added.

According to Realtor.com, Cage purchased the 4,000-square-foot home in 2024 for $10.5 million.

The modern home features a rooftop deck and a ground-level outdoor lounge area, with the inside featuring floor-to-ceiling windows, giving anyone who stepped inside the perfect ocean view.

It does not appear that Cage was home at the time of the driveway collapse, and no injuries have been reported.

Cage is known for his roles in “Fast Times at Ridgemont High,” “Moonstruck,” “Face/Off,” “Gone In 60 Seconds” and “Leaving Las Vegas,” which earned him an Academy Award.

“I like to break forms, try different things, and I don’t think studios are comfortable with that,” he told The Guardian in March 2018 about his career. “But in an independently spirited film, I can do that. Also, if I don’t have somewhere to go in the morning and a job to do, it can be very self-destructive. Then I’m just going to sit and order two bottles of red wine and dissolve, and I don’t want to be that person, so I have to work.”
