Sky News host Chris Kenny says the Taiwan Strait is “the world’s greatest potential superpower flashpoint”.
Mr Kenny said when US Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan earlier in the week, she “defied the warnings and rebukes from Beijing” – but was forced to “take the long way” to the nation due to military mobilisation.
“Let’s get back to first principles, and make the obvious point that any US politician, indeed any person in the free world, ought to be allowed to visit Taiwan any time,” he said.
“Beijing has no right to think it can pick and choose, and dictate, who can visit Taiwan.”
Mr Kenny said Ms Pelosi’s visit – while imperfectly handled – showed the United States “would not be bullied and the people of Taiwan won’t be abandoned”.
“They have remained free and prosperous because they have not overreached with declarations of independence, and because liberal democracies have recognised a nuanced position over One China and Taiwan,” he said.
