Peter Okoye’s Solo Career Gains Momentum as P-Square Family Feud Resurfaces – THISDAYLIVE

Ferdinand Ekechukwu

Nigerian singer Peter Okoye, formerly of P-Square music group, has been in the news cycle lately for airing a series of escalating allegations against his other brothers, his twin Paul Okoye aka Rude Boy, elder brother and music executive, former manager, Jude Okoye, accusing the latter of financial misconduct tied to the group’s earnings. Jude has however denied the claims.

For years, fans have watched the famous twins, Peter and Paul Okoye, exchange subtle jabs online without directly addressing the issues that divided them. Peter who goes with the moniker Mr. P, without mincing words on the long-running PSquare family feud which once again took social media, releasing an eight-part video detailing his account of P-Square’s history.

In the series, Peter made mention of his relationship with his brothers and the treatment of his wife, Lola Omotayo-Okoye, and their son.  Jude and Paul have disputed some of his claims and presented their own accounts of the disagreements. The public fallout has kept the Okoye family trending, and some fans, watching Mr. P release new music and content in the middle of it.

Questions arose considering the timing, with a handful of comments accusing him of trying to draw attention to his solo career while his family’s issues dominate headlines. While “Mr. P” recorded significant growth across his music, social media and fashion platforms amid a wave of public support over the renewed P-Square family feud.

His new single ‘I Love You Because’ ahead of his upcoming album, OG Forever, fans described as underwhelming, with some questioning the singer’s recent musical output. The song itself was released on August 7 as part of the buildup to his upcoming album. The official music video, featuring Nollywood actors Stan Nze and Blessing Nze, followed days later.

Prompting a fresh wave of commentary once Mr. P shared the video announcement on X with a simple caption asking fans for their thoughts, which elicited mixed reactions and comments. Mr. P has not directly addressed the criticism of the song itself. He has, however, previously pushed back against unrelated backlash this year, including comments questioning his age and relevance as an artist, arguing that similar behaviour from older international stars rarely draws the same level of scrutiny.

For years, fans have watched the famous twins, Peter and Paul Okoye, exchange subtle jabs online without directly addressing the issues that divided them. His recently released song, “I Can’t Look Away”, has also been viewed 3.7 million times on YouTube. On Spotify, Album Talks announced on its social media pages on Sunday that Mr P had reached 500,000 monthly listeners for the first time in his solo career. The wave of attention has also extended to Zipp Republic, the lifestyle and street wear brand founded by Mr P.

The singer said on X on Sunday that nearly 3,000 units of the red ZR snapback cap he has worn during his ongoing tell-all series were sold within seven days. The 44-year-old singer has crossed one million subscribers on YouTube, surpassed 500,000 monthly listeners on Spotify for the first time in his solo career, and said nearly 3,000 units of his Red ZR cap were sold within seven days.

“Guys, we honestly didn’t see this coming. Almost 3,000 Red ZR CAPS sold in the last 7 days, and more orders are still pouring in every second, ZippRepublic. “We are overwhelmed with orders right now, so please be a little patient with us. We promise every single order will be delivered asap,” he wrote. Peter and Paul formed P-Square.

Subsequently became one of Africa’s most successful music duos before their first split in 2017. The twins reconciled in 2021 but separated again in 2024 following renewed disagreements over the group’s finances and management. The dispute subsequently led to an investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and a court case involving Jude, who has denied wrongdoing.
