Pharrell, NIGO® & KAWS to Transform Tokyo’s Yurakucho Into a Massive Culture Hub

YURAKUCHO PARK: A Giant New Cultural Playground in the Heart of Tokyo

Built on the former site of the demolished Yurakucho Building and Shin-Yurakucho Building, YURAKUCHO PARK will occupy around 10,800 square meters directly outside Yurakucho Station. Rather than simply creating another green plaza, developer Mitsubishi Estate says the project is designed as an immersive urban stage where visitors can experience Japanese culture through events, installations, pop-ups, and interactive spaces.

The company has previously experimented with similar concepts through projects like TOKYO TORCH Park and Marunouchi Street Park, temporarily transforming city spaces into lively hubs for art, food, and community events. With YURAKUCHO PARK, the scale becomes far larger, and the focus shifts toward presenting Japanese culture to a global audience.

According to Mitsubishi Estate’s announcement, the space is intended to be more than somewhere visitors simply “see.” Instead, it aims to create experiences that people can physically feel and participate in, while also allowing the public to witness the neighborhood’s evolution before future large-scale redevelopment begins.

Pharrell Williams and NIGO® to Launch “JAPA VALLEY TOKYO”

One of the biggest highlights will be JAPA VALLEY TOKYO, a new art, retail, and hospitality project by NOT A HOTEL in collaboration with Pharrell Williams and NIGO®.

Inspired by California’s Napa Valley, the concept reimagines Japanese sake brewing through the lens of craftsmanship, tourism, fashion, and culture. The project will blend Japanese food culture, art, design, and fashion into a single destination experience.

The creative team also plans to showcase collaborative artwork by internationally renowned contemporary artist KAWS, which is expected to become a new visual landmark for the Yurakucho area.

Visitors can expect:
・Pop-up stores focused on art, fashion, food, and Japanese culture
・Event spaces hosting cultural programs and creative collaborations
・Large-scale art installations, including works involving KAWS
・Architectural and spatial design developed with Mitsubishi Jisho Design alongside Pharrell Williams and NIGO®’s creative team

JAPA VALLEY TOKYO is currently scheduled to open within the site in 2027.

Why Yurakucho Matters

For decades, Marunouchi and Yurakucho have been among Tokyo’s most important business districts, lined with office towers, historic department stores, luxury hotels, and some of the city’s busiest transport hubs.

Centered around Tokyo Station and neighboring areas like Yurakucho, Otemachi, and Hibiya, the district has long served as one of Japan’s leading business and commercial centers. At the same time, it has gradually evolved into a more lifestyle-oriented destination, with tree-lined streets, open plazas, seasonal events, and an increasingly walkable atmosphere that contrasts with Tokyo’s faster-paced neighborhoods.

The area is also home to some of central Tokyo’s best-known landmarks, including the Tokyo International Forum, a striking glass-and-steel cultural complex that regularly hosts concerts, exhibitions, and international events. During winter, Marunouchi is especially famous for the annual Marunouchi Illumination, when the streets around Marunouchi Naka-dori glow with hundreds of thousands of champagne-gold lights. Spring and summer also bring open-air markets, terrace dining, art installations, and cultural events that draw both office workers and visitors.

Recent redevelopment efforts have increasingly focused on making the district feel more creative, cultural, and people-oriented rather than simply corporate.

Mitsubishi Estate describes Yurakucho and nearby Tokiwabashi as the “two wings” of the Marunouchi area’s future development plans. While the massive Torch Tower project continues rising near Tokyo Station ahead of its planned 2028 completion, YURAKUCHO PARK represents a more experimental approach: temporarily transforming vacant redevelopment land into a dynamic cultural destination before permanent construction begins.

The result could become one of Tokyo’s most interesting new gathering spaces, especially given its combination of world-famous creatives, contemporary art, Japanese craftsmanship, and one of the city’s most central locations.
