At a major oil storage terminal in Malaysia, a regional hub for petroleum product distribution, pump failures caused by cavitation, seal leakage or shaft damage could take critical pumps offline for up to two weeks. Yokogawa connected vibration sensors, flow meters and the distributed control system with the terminal automation system, so pump behaviour could be read against live operations such as ship loading and tank transfers, with predictive analytics layered on top. In a first phase covering six fuel oil pumps, unplanned downtime fell from as much as two weeks to three days, an 85 percent reduction, and maintenance is now scheduled around shipping windows rather than forced by breakdowns. The terminal has since extended the deployment to more than 30 fuel oil pumps.
