Beijing (dpa) – China has given assurances that it will not support Russia by supplying arms in the war against Ukraine, whether now or in the future. “We are not supplying arms to the conflicting parties and will not do so in the future,” said Foreign Minister Qin Gang after almost two hours of talks with Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock in Beijing. Qin Gang’s meeting with Baerbock lasted almost twice as long as planned.
The German Foreign Minister had previously urged the Chinese government to lobby Moscow more strongly to end the war. Baerbock said: “Frankly, I wonder why the Chinese positioning does not include calling on the aggressor Russia to stop the war. We all know President Putin could do so any time.”
Also with a view to Taiwan, Baerbock added: “Conflicts must be resolved solely by peaceful means.” She reiterated Germany’s One China policy, according to which Beijing is recognised as the only legitimate government of China and no diplomatic relations are maintained with Taiwan. However, the minister stressed that a change of the status quo by force was unacceptable. She was equally clear in her concern that China was imposing restrictions on freedoms in civil society and on human rights.
