Not everyone is lucky enough to get a loving hug from Princess Charlotte, but for a certain Sophie Carter there could not have been a better wedding gift. Sophie is best friends with Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, as well as being Princess Charlotte’s godmother.
Back in September 2018, when Sophie got married, she was on the receiving end of a hug from the young royal. Sophie’s wedding was attended by a number of royals, including the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, William and Kate, and their son George.
Sophie and Kate have actually been friends for several years. She was at Princess Charlotte’s christening in 2015 and grew up close to Kate and William’s home in Norfolk, Amner Hall.

Her family is part of an exclusive circle of rich farmers and landowners that are often called the ‘Turnip Toffs’, and at one point she even went out with Prince William’s close friend Thomas van Straubenzee, who is Charlotte’s godfather. Although they have since broken up, Sophie and Thomas remain Charlotte’s godparents.
Thomas attended Ludgrove School with William and Harry, and was previously married to Lady Melissa Percy, daughter of the 12th Duke of Northumberland. Their marriage lasted three years between 2013 and 2016. In 2020, he married assistant headmistress Lucy Lanigan-O’Keeffe, daughter of barrister Stephen Lanigan-O’Keeffe and sister of Irish Olympic pentathlete Arthur Lanigan-O’Keeffe.

Kate’s sister Pippa did not attend Sophie’s wedding in 2018 because she was due to give birth, but Sophie attended Pippa’s big day when she married James Matthews in May 2017 at St. Mark’s church in Englefield, Berkshire. She was also in attendance at Harry and Meghan’s wedding in 2018 at Windsor Castle.
When Sophie gave birth to her own daughter in 2019, she named her Amalia Rose Charlotte, after the young princess.
